I've been getting a message on my tv screen saying that my cable box will shut off if I don't hit a key on the remote. Is this something new?

Yes, but i'm usually up around that time and I've only noticed it lately. I'm guessing it's updating?

usually it does that i think to conserve power, it usually is just turning off shutting off the hard drive, well atleast i think that is what mine does

It shuts itself off so that it can download the next day of guide information and schedule all episode recordings.
