Apple Announces new iPhone 5

It just struck me- not a single review I've read contains the word "gorilla." As in, glass.

No but if you watch the drop test videos I linked to a few pages back in this thread you will know that the iPhone 5 is tough. I don't care what brand the screen is. I just know that it is very durable.

Edit: here is that link again for those who didn't see it.

I do not think the glass on the screen is thinner, they just combined 2 of the layers under the glass, the touch sensing layer and the LCD into one. So, the display takes up less room inside the phone.

ok, that sounds familiar. That explains why it seems the same -- and one of the reasons why the phone is so much thinner; which is one of the nice things about it!!

By the time it's in an Otterbox Defender, thin won't matter. But since I smashed my 3G, it'll mean peace of mind.

I want to keep my current AT&T plan, which has the unlimited data and minimal (200) texts each month. Someone here suggested go to an AT&T store instead of Apple, to specifically make sure of this.
I bought mine through Apple's online store and was able to keep the same plan as I had with my iPhone 4.
Are there any other things I should beware of? I heard they might try "connect fees" or other charges even though I am an existing customer. Will I need to bring my bill or any paperwork?
AT&T charged my account $36 for the phone activation, and state tax on top of that. But that was it.

anyone else having wifi problems? just read on mac support forums that many 5's are having serious wifi issues. mine is fine on 4g (for the most part).

Yes the WIFI speeds are slow. A lot of times when I test it shows my WIFI being under 1 MB down (yet 9MB up) while if I test on my laptop which is also wireless it tests as 32 down and 9 up.

They say it has something with WPA2 protection. (which is how my WIFI is secured.)

I am using WPA2 protection too and I haven't noticed any WIFI problems yet.

Once again, these LTE speeds are unbelievable. They completely blow away my home cable internet speed. The screen and other features are nice but Verizon LTE alone was worth the upgrade from my 4S. These tests were taken sitting at my desk in Fenton MI. The new iPhone is keeping me from getting my work done.

doing more reading on subject and it is very confusing. apple says its a software issue and they are working on a fix. others are saying its a hardware issue. some have received replacement phones that haven't solved the problem.

i question whether the intelligent people at my verizon store can rectify the problem. if there is no resolution by wednesday (when i can get to verizon), i'll return the phone and use my 4s.

I agree completely. That's by far my favorite feature of the upgrade.

Scott mentioned something about the speakers earlier. I want the next iPhone to have speakers on each side. Sort of like surround sound and the channels would correspond with how you have your phone tilted.

It's clearly not affecting everyone. Here is a WIFI speed test I just took on my iPhone 5. It is consistent with speed tests taken on my laptop. It sounds like they may have shipped some iPhones with bad WIFI but mine is proof that it isn't bad for everyone. Once again, I did have WPA2 encryption enabled on my home WIFI network when I took this test.
