Black Backgrounds

I love the quality of my free to air pictures, but recently i begin to notice that every major retailer of hdtv/digitals always display them in front of a black background. Does anyone know why? i mean the pic really pops off the set. I have been thinking of painting my wall black?

anyone doing that already? is it just in my mind?

Darker, flat/matte colored walls and ceilings reduce improper light refections.
