Im kind of confused. I know the 922 will do paid programming, but without a subscription will it do general FTA? on C band AND Ku? Im trying to determine if I should get that or a pansat 9200 receiver which does FTA only.

ok i understand now, basically public encryption. Things get clearer everyday :)

To clarify, get the Pansat, there's plenty of free stuff available with it that you wouldn't get with the 922.
Many folks have hybrid systems consisting of a FTA receiver and 4DTV and maybe even analog C-band for feeds etc. There's lots of info here to help you get it set up correctly and make it all "play nice" together.
I just connected a Pansat 3500, a DSR905 and an old Uniden Supra analog receiver to 3 Ku band dishes and 2 C-Band units........so far as long as I have everything set correctly it all works well together.
