Can't get remote to control volume of receiver

I'm trying to get the remote for my h20 to to control the volume of my pioneer receiver. I got the pioneer programmed to av2 and it powers on and off. Then I tried programming the remote to let av2 control the volume by pressing and holding mute and select together then pressing 993 (or whatever the numbers are, I typed in correctly) and then select. I go back to av1 (my receiver is av1 because I have another in the same room) and press volume and the alert comes up that my remote isnt programmed to control volume. I've probably tried 20 times without success. Any thoughts? Thanks for any help.

The volume keys won't work at all without a tv code programmed to the tv device. It can be your tv brand's code, or any tv brands code, just be sure theres a 5 digit code starting 1**** programmed to the tv device.
