So i just subscribed to directv, the install guy should be here saturday morning for the install, i got a few quick questions. first off this is what i ordered: 1 HD receiver (non-dvr), and 3 SD receivers. Theres a hole from the dish install with 2 coaxs coming through the house into one of the rooms closets which is the "hub" to the wall plates in the other rooms. question...will the installer run new wires for the receivers or use a multi-switch? and if they use a multiswitch do they charge you for that or is it considered part of the free installation? id love for the installer to just use the existing wires and just install a multiswitch but i very much doubt thatd happen considering its free installation.

You'll need a total of 4 cables since you have four receivers. The dish has a built in multiswitch to handle four connections, and the external multiswitch would need four wires from the dish to it so either way you look at it you'll need two more wires run from the dish into the house. If you did need a multiswitch due to more then 4 cable runs then that would be included in the free install.

If you can afford to I'd highly recommend going with the HD DVR. The HD DVR is where all the new features are showing up like media share and video on demand. Plus, once you have a DVR you'll wonder why you didn't have one earlier.

heh i was going to get the hd-dvr, but i cant get over the fact that you're charged a monthly fee to record digital media onto a hardrive in your own house much less the cost of the dvr box itself. and why cant you just use a 2x4 multiswitch? really dont want to run new wiring as the existing wiring is pretty well hidden/painted already.

At least D* only charges once per account, Dish charges per DVR in addition to the lease/mirroring fee, that can really add up.

As for your question, that's just the way D* has engineered it the multiswitch needs the four wires to work. They do have a new dish coming out 'sometime' this year which has only one wire into the house. Then once in the house you can use splitters to feed up to 8 tuners which would fit your needs but no availability date has been announced.

The DVR fee is well worth every penny, and I wouldn't hesitate to pay 2x+. Unless they've changed the offers, you should at least be able to get a DVR on one of your SD TVs for free. Once you have a DVR, you'll wonder how you ever got by without it.

We don't even have any non-DVRs in our house.

nope it was either a choice between 1 free hd receiver or free dvr. i chose the hd receiver. i can get by without the dvr as i have an atsc tuner in my htpc which i use to record OTA (LOST and Heroes mainly so it suits me fine).

just wished i didnt have to get new wires run! how come directv doesnt have the "dp plus seperators" that allow the satelite feed to be split like dish net.

Dude, all your reasons are stupid. Trust me. I got an HD reciever when I started DTV, and then bought a DVR afterwards (luckily I have a second HDTV to put the old H21 on), but I would never go back to not having a dvr. If you have high speed internet, the on demand is awesome, having a DVR is awesome. I can record 2 prime time TV shows at once, while downloading something from On demand.

Call them while it's still not too late. It's worth every penny to get the DVR, it's worth every penny plus to have the service.

Either that, or you can continue to watch TV on the network's schedule like the rest of the chumps. F you.

Ya know somehow i think telling someone their reasoning is stupid is against forum rules.

As far as the OT goes as many have stated you need more cables run... you may get lucky and if you ask the installer he will put in the switch. You will still need to run the four wires though. Depending on where you live you may get a SWM dish, I heard they are testing those in some markets, those only require one cable to be run.

Don't know until you call them and ask if you can.
