In prep for moving my files to a new machine, I have been copying files to an EHD. I have a 6GB .mpg video file that will not copy to my new WD 1TB EHD (90% EMPTY). But it copied fine to an older, smaller EHD. I get the error msg:
Cannot copy filename: There is not enough free disk space.

Yet there is, several times over. And it copies to another EHD with barely enough space to fit. And it still won't copy, EHD to EHD.

Anyone able to explain what's happening?

Yes, you are most likely moving that file from an NTFS formatted disk to a FAT32 formatted disk. Reformat the WD to NTFS. You can't copy files larger to 4GB to a FAT32 formatted partition. The "not enough free disk space" is the error windows throws in the situation.

Thank you - I should have considered that the EHD might not be NTFS.
