Acronis is a great program,it allows you to completely clone your hdd,or partially if you prefer.It has saved me at least twice.

Maybe another clue: Regardless of which drive I try to boot from I get a disc read error, but they both pass a SMART test. The primary drive takes a while to pass the short test. It hangs on the last 1%, but it does pass eventually.

HP m8407c. I replaced the hard drive today and all seems to be well.

Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver update resolves issue with some drives reporting that they need to be replaced when they do not need to be.
Your drive may have been fine. Try installing this:

avg1joe, turns out that driver update is only for 32 bit systems, mine is a 64 bit. Thanks anyway.

Edit: I found the 64 bit version and I am installing it now. I hope it works!

Re-edit: Nope, still getting the disc read error. I guess the hard drive is toast.
