Phil Zimmermann (PGP creator) once said that only a person that spent some considerable time breaking codes can create a good cypher.
Cryptology is a very interesting field. I don't think there is any field in pure mathematics with a shorter link between theory and application...

And before I'm told again that this is nothing but "academic interest" and "pretending to know more than one does", I was doing math for a living for most of my life...

I put in several years at NSA while in the AF, as a cryptologist and translator. Challenging and enjoyable, and pride in doing something useful for national security.
