Wonder if this one was made for the US market? And if so, why include 'EPG' support since most channels fta dont have it? Are all these co's really playing to another group of users in n America?

Well, maybe cause they says it has EPG support with the hard drive installed they can feel better about themselves and the receiver.

IMHO of course they are. They are in business to make money, the money is in the illegal use of the boxes whether we think its right or not. I meet more and more people that when they ask me what I am doing the first thing they ask is "Well doesn't the box let you get it ALL without paying?" I always answer "YES!" I get all the RTN's, all the retroJams channels, ALL of it! :)

I usually get a puzzled look and then the subject changes.....;)

Sadly out of every 1000 boxes sold I bet only 1-3 is for legal use.

Maybe you senior members can answer this one, then. WHy doesnt dishnetwork secure their system? Cost too much money? or they just dont care? Money-grubbing as they are with fees (I had their stupid system 2yrs before I got sick of it) seems like they would want to lock it down ASAP

who knows?

Funny you should mention that.
Their Canadian 3rd-cousin BEV, got sued by a big Canadian cable company.
The complaint was something like: "with all the people stealing BEV, it cuts into our revenue".

I'd be surprised if the ratio of FTA to illegal users is 1000 to 3
But 10 to 1 might not be a surprise.
Of course, that's just my guess against the next guy; one is no better than the other.

Today, I suspect it's the little FTA-installer-shop that moves the boxes.
I can't imagine that most users have a clue how to keep 'em running.
(and never mind the ones who ask here... )

Anole, I kinda agree, eventhough people will point to the number of visits and registered users (gotta register there to read anything) to the other sites for the other use of the receiver. I wish there was some way to log the turnover(for lack of a better term) of people who use FTA for illegal purposes. I bet most do it at first to see how it works, keep up for a little bit, then just give up as it is unreliable and has to be alot of work to keep the boxes updated etc.
