The long awaited C31 receiver for use with the HR34 is in the wild.

Another poster indicated they are starting to roll into Directv warehouses with a September launch expected, and a $50 price expected.

The advantage of the C31 for use with the HMC HR34 is that it gives full trick-play DVR function versus that of using a regular HD receiver. I would also expect it lets you manage DVR schedules like on the HR34, which the current HD receivers do not - though I don't know if this capability is there or not.

They sure are small! Looks like about 6"x3"x1.25" or so.

Assuming it works great, I would be willing to trade out my 3 HR24s for one HR34 and one of these little jewels. It would simplify management of recordings and do all I use with the gear I have now.

I see it as nearly the same as Hopper+Joey setup without PTAT, but having 5 tuners all the time.

Glad to see this finally coming out. I saw one of these late last year and expected them to be out long before this.

For the DISH people reading the thread his is like the "Joey" for your Hopper. And gives a MUCH better experience!

You are correct. It gives full access to recordings, let's you use the HR34 as if you have a HDDVR in that location. You can also link 8 up to the 34 but only 3 can be used at a time.

I'm set up to have an HR34 and three H25's installed in 2 weeks. I contemplated getting at least one HR24 instead of one of the H25's simply because I've been with Dish for so long and I really like being able to pause/rewind/resume live tv.

Will I be able to switch to these C31's when they become available or will I be charged a ton? Should I just wait until they are released before having my system installed?

I don't know that I'd wait, but it is your call. It may not come out until Q4 even, and it could be a limited market release at first. Worst case if you decide to switch a H25 to a C31 at some point in the future you're looking at a max outlay of $50 per.

And potentially a new (er) 24 month commitment.

So how inconvenient is it to perform the equivalent of trick play functions on the H25? I'm so used to just hitting pause or rewinding live tv a couple of minutes if I miss something with Dish. With the H25c I know you have to record what you're watching then you can do trick play. Does it record it from the beginning of the show or just from that current point forward? If it only records from that point forward, it would be pretty useless for me. I need it to essentially perform as a live tv buffer where I can go back 30, 60, even 90 minutes if needed. If it's only able to pause and resume from that point, then it may be a deal breaker.

It records from the point you are at. It drives me nuts when I'm at that TV. Either wait, or invest in additional DVRs for the secondary TVs.

meh, i dont like the fact these things use a tuner from the hmc
but thats me

Accessing an HR34 tuner at the remote tv's using the new C31 client devices is the only way for getting my desired AM21N OTA stations to pass through to the remote tv's, which doesn't happen now when H25's are used, so I'm anxiously awaiting the C31's.
