I've been a D* customer for about 4.5 years. My contract expired after 2 years, I've never re-up'ed it. Recently my 24 month free HD discount expired. So I called them today and said, calmly, that I was looking to reduce my bill and was going to probably downgrade my programming, but I was wondering if I was eligible for any discounts.

The CSR looked up my account and said, yes, I was eligible. She put me on a $15/mo credit for the next 12 months and gave me the traditional 3 free months of HBO. No hassle at all. She was very polite. No contractual obligation. The key was that I was on paperless auto-pay.

All I had to do was to call and ask.
