With satellites moving around all the time calling satellites by name gets confusing (to me anyway). Orbital locations on the other hand never change. When discussing satellites would you prefer to reference satellites by...

I usually say both....until recently we really didn't have any issues

The Telstar got bought by IA and all the T sats went to IA (seemed pretty simple...T6 was IA6, T5 was IA5 etc)
Then Galaxy bought them and screwed everything up :)
And the new sats getting put in ordbit and moving confuse it even more :D

I guess its personal preference

I usually rely on "The List" for most of my channel information. This thread http://www.satelliteguys.us/free-air-fta-discussion/133698-combo-amc5-sbs6.html
Referenced AMC5 and SBS6. SBS6 is not listed in thelist. This is just one of many examples where unnecessary cross referencing has to take place to know what someone is talking about.

Actually this is a bad example because channel ONN was referenced. I know that ONN is on 72W Horizons 2 but you get the idea.

My choice is either orbital location or orbital location and name.

I proposed before a notation like IA5@95W, E*12@61.5W, etc

That would work for me. I guess what I'm saying is that it would be nice if we could all agree on a standard, whatever that standard might be.

I like what Smith proposed, in fact I think I remember proposing something similar before myself.

Sorry....I wanted to correct it, but I did not know how edit the post title.:(
I meant Horizons 2.:) Future I must base in "the list!"

My vote is for recent both. H2@83W

With me, you'll get whatever pops out of my head... I don't keep a ready list next to me (maybe I should), and like Iceberg mentioned, they have changed names somewhat, too much in recent memory...?? I'm from the old school have have the old old names imbedded in my thoughts, so I usually will try to keep in mind that there are also others around from "the day", and it may be easier for them if I use the old names? So I generally use them all, such as T5/IA5/G25 @ 97.0w..., but on occassion, I might forget, I'm very good at forgetting....???? Now what was it that this thread is talking about...??????? I forget...??????

All in All, I don't think it should be any kind of a rule imposed to how you post a satellite location or it's name. I don't even agree with the rule on "not posting feeds/channels, not listed on lyngsat (or now the List)", but I'm not trying to make waves, so I abide by them, or at least try to...? If you make this a rule, I will try to abide, but I will still disagree...........

I prefer the word standard. Rule sounds so official and confining. Perhaps just a reminder would be even better. Seriously I'm not suggesting making this a rule of any kind. But for clarity of posting it might help some of us less experienced FTAers understand what's going on without having to consult the Rosetta Stone.

As far as forgetting stuff… what were we talking about???

I don't think you could do just the orbital position. There are slots that have more than one.

Why not just do what we've been doing. If we don't know what somebody else is referring to, just ask. It's been working up to now.

Just my two nickels worth....

I would like to encourage the use of the orbital location. - :up

What you want to use in addition, is up to you. - :p

Personally I like when someone uses the actual spacecraft name, as I am a nerd and already know where the bird is and am probably scanning it :)

Orbital location is not that bad... but you can have different birds in one location, one c the other ku, or like in Europe where they have like 50 satellites in one orbital slot hahaha, orbital location is much better than someone who uses the 4dtv names, that can be confusing, again though I vote for the name.

Orbital position and (optional) name. Name would be useful if referring to a satellite that shares an orbital slot with another. For example, if someone just said "91w", that could be Nimiq (DBS) or Galaxy 11 (FSS). Don't make it a rule, though. This is a very informal forum (compared to others) and that's one of its strengths :)

I seem to muddle along just fine, however I do on occasion have to go to Ice's 'what sat. is where?' section......as I can never remember the amc sats. or the g sats. I still have westar and spacenet stuck in my mind from my old days.
