With satellites moving around all the time calling satellites by name gets confusing (to me anyway). Orbital locations on the other hand never change. When discussing satellites would you prefer to reference satellites by...
I usually say both....until recently we really didn't have any issues
The Telstar got bought by IA and all the T sats went to IA (seemed pretty simple...T6 was IA6, T5 was IA5 etc)
Then Galaxy bought them and screwed everything up
And the new sats getting put in ordbit and moving confuse it even more
I guess its personal preference
I proposed before a notation like IA5@95W, E*12@61.5W, etc
I usually rely on "The List" for most of my channel information. This thread http://www.satelliteguys.us/free-air-fta-discussion/133698-combo-amc5-sbs6.html
Referenced AMC5 and SBS6. SBS6 is not listed in thelist. This is just one of many examples where unnecessary cross referencing has to take place to know what someone is talking about.
Actually this is a bad example because channel ONN was referenced. I know that ONN is on 72W Horizons 2 but you get the idea.
My choice is either orbital location or orbital location and name.
I prefer the word standard. Rule sounds so official and confining. Perhaps just a reminder would be even better. Seriously I'm not suggesting making this a rule of any kind. But for clarity of posting it might help some of us less experienced FTAers understand what's going on without having to consult the Rosetta Stone. With me, you'll get whatever pops out of my head... I don't keep a ready list next to me (maybe I should), and like Iceberg mentioned, they have changed names somewhat, too much in recent memory...?? I'm from the old school have have the old old names imbedded in my thoughts, so I usually will try to keep in mind that there are also others around from "the day", and it may be easier for them if I use the old names? So I generally use them all, such as T5/IA5/G25 @ 97.0w..., but on occassion, I might forget, I'm very good at forgetting....???? Now what was it that this thread is talking about...??????? I forget...??????
All in All, I don't think it should be any kind of a rule imposed to how you post a satellite location or it's name. I don't even agree with the rule on "not posting feeds/channels, not listed on lyngsat (or now the List)", but I'm not trying to make waves, so I abide by them, or at least try to...? If you make this a rule, I will try to abide, but I will still disagree...........
Why not just do what we've been doing. If we don't know what somebody else is referring to, just ask. It's been working up to now.
Just my two nickels worth....
