Dish Hopper 3 H712 Software Update

Advertisements
Well, I still have H711 on my Hopper 3, but some reported receiving H712. Please feel free to continue discussing the IR remote issues with your Hopper 3 and whatever issues you are having with H712.
Just a PSA to anyone who wants to install it manually. My update took about 30 minutes from the time I clicked Update until it was completed. I think it rebooted at least twice during the install. Seems it took longer than the last update. I haven't noticed any changes yet.

I installed H712 manually this morning and concur with your statement regarding the total time for the installation. Unfortunately it did not fix the IR problems I have been experiencing with the Dish Hopper 3 and my Sofabaton X2 universal remote.

I think all updates can take between 30 minutes to 1 hour. For me, I just finished updating which completed at 6:38PM Pacific Time, I started between 6:03PM-6:08PM Pacific Time and it rebooted once.

After one full day plus a few hours on the new H712 firmware on my Dish Hopper 3 I can attest that the next firmware behaves exactly like the older H711 firmware. There are 2 main issues with both versions of the firmware.

1. The Dish Hopper 3 stops responding to IR commands. For example when I run the Dish Network shutdown activity the Dish Hopper 3 after using the OEM Dish remote it does not shut down. Then I open the Dish Hopper 3 device from my Sofabaton X2 universal remote and press the 'Power Off' button and it still doesn't shut down. At this point I press the 'Power Off' button several times (anywhere from 5-40 times) and finally the Dish Hopper 3 will turn off.

At this point I can turn the Dish Hopper 3 on and off using the 'Power On' and 'Power Off' button from my Sofabaton X2 universal remote. However, once I begin using the OEM Dish remote the problem returns and the Dish Hopper 3 will not respond to IR commands. This is very reproducible as it appears that the RF commands from the OEM Dish remote is causing some type of conflict with the IR commands.

2. While using the OEM Dish remote we are still having the issue where the Dish Hopper 3 randomly goes into standby mode and the little rectangular box bounces around the screen that says 'Press SAT to Watch TV' and when we push the 'Select' button on the OEM Dish remote it immediately starts working again.

Speaking about updates and had always been curious about this one, is there a reason the nightly reboot update check does not see the update until a few weeks to months later while the manual check for update will see the update and update it? Do both methods check for updates a different way? Or maybe the manual update check is really to get early access to the update before it's actually forced?

Staged rollout. Nightly updates are done by blocks of receiver numbers to lighten bandwidth demand of images, and to allow for possible backtracking of an image should problems arise during rollout. These kind of strategies are common for mass rollouts of SW/Firmware over the air.

Nightly updates are same as a manual check, it just depends on whether you're in the current block list.

Manual updates just ignores the block list and says update now. Although, I've seen manual updates also block listed when they are being careful with a new update.

Wish the IR issue in H711 had been discovered before it rolled out...

Ok, discovered something new in the IR issue last night and verified it again tonight (testing my theory).

I was watching The Rockford Files on 373 Sunday night and found that after an hour, I'd forgotten to tap the View button on my Pronto Pro for a full hour (guess I don't get another banana ;) ). I figured I'd have to tap it 5-25 times. Tapped it ONCE and the banner popped up immediately! So, 373 is an SD channel. Hm...

Tested it again tonight on channel 293. Watched Star Trek (original series) for an hour, and purposely didn't tap the View button during the entire hour. After an hour, tapped View and the top banner immediately popped up! Again, 293 is an SD channel.

So, the problem only seems to happen on HD and 4K channel viewing and I have to remember to tap the View button to pop the banner every 15 minutes to keep the IR side "awake" on my Hopper 3.

Hope this piece of info helps.

I have performed several more tests with my Dish Hopper 3 and how it no longer works properly with IR codes. My issue is that as soon as I use the OEM Dish remote which uses RF, the IR function on my Sofabaton X2 universal remote stops functioning normally.

For example I performed the following tests.

1. Turn on Dish Hopper 3 using Sofabaton X2 universal IR remote and it works as expected and turns on.
2. Turn off Dish Hopper 3 using Sofabaton X2 universal IR remote and it works as expected and turns off.
3. Perform steps 1 and 2 listed above multiple times and everything works as expected with the Dish Hopper 3 turning on and then off.
4. Now after turning on the Dish Hopper 3 with the Sofabaton universal IR remote I use the OEM Dish RF remote and press the 'Home' key 3 times to view 'Diagnostics' and then press the 'Back' button. At this point the IR reception on the Dish Hopper 3 no longer functions as it should. I have to press the 'Power Off' button several times (anywhere from 5 to 40 times) to get the Dish Hopper 3 to turn off. I can reproduce this issue 100 percent of the time using this method.

Bottom line, in my testing on this issue over the past 6 weeks it seems to me that any use of the OEM Dish RF remote somehow causes an issue with the ability of the Dish Hopper 3 to successfully process IR commands.

There is a issue I have had since at least H708 on a Hopper 3 currently on H712 with Hopper Plus currently on P15317. It appears to happen nightly during the nightly update process as this is basically what happens:

1) It will show this which will be called screen 1:
1790339240688.webp

and basically sit there after the 1-2 without progressing to 3
2) then after some long delay after it gave up trying, it will show this which will be called screen 2:
1790339465158.webp

3) After some time, it will reboot and basically show 1) and 2) and reboot a few times and eventually the reboot will show screen 1 but actually connect to the Hopper successfully getting to 3 in screen 1.
The nightly reboot is at 1:00AM Pacific Time but it will go through screen 1 and screen 2 and at around 2:00AM Pacific Time which is basically 1 hour later, it will actually boot successfully all the way.
This appears to happen every day but only with nightly reboots as manual reboots or manually check for updates which causes a reboot does not have the issue.

Another issue with H712, H711 and earlier version(s) is that there are times when a streaming channel has failed and going to another streaming channel will only show the DISH icon downloading but it never gets past that. The fix is to view a satellite channel first and then the streaming channels will work again. This is on a Hopper 3 (Software H712) with Hopper Plus (Software P15317).
