Dish Network Sues Kodi Add-On Library “TV Addons

The boxes aren't Kodi's. Kodi is just an app that can run on a variety of OS's, including Windows, Android, and the Amazon version of Android. Kodi doesn't actually manufacture any hardware or sell anything. It's just an open source piece of software that people are creating addons for that allow the pirate activity.
Kodi is just Open Source Media Center. It by itself it 100% legal. The issue is when you add these add on's which are not written by Kodi, that's when things can get illegal.
But reading the news it appears that many of these add ons are dropping dead like flies.
For the past 2 years I have been working with a few different agencies about this problem, and while I can't say much, I would expect the crackdown to get more intense and a few more big names jumping in and joining the fight.

It's called corporate chest thumping and wheel spinning. Can they shut down some of the providers? Sure. Will they stop it? No. How many decades has the industry tried to stop copying of content whether it be VHS tapes or DVD's? 30 years you say? Is it still happening? You bet. As for the idea that the satellite signal stealing has been stopped, you haven't been paying attention, it's still going strong. Can HDMI content protection be by-passed? Yep, in a heartbeat. No matter what the industry tries someone somewhere will beat it, history has proven that over and over, from beating Atari's floppy drive skewing to hacking C-band DigiCipher to DTV hacking and so on. The only winners will be, once again, the lawyers.
I'm surprised how easy it is to get it working on a pc. Don't have any android TV boxes.
I think what it could do is force Kodi to go to some sort of app store like approval method for addons. Kodi is great software and if they want to continue to exist they may have to go this route. Only issue I see is that because its Open Source any kind of protections they put into place to prevent unauthorized add on's would likely be quickly circumvented. Heck even if it went closed source we all know the cat and mouse game that goes on with everything electronic. Look at how many times Apple patched a jailbreak exploit only for developers to find another. It's always back and forth and I think the target here has to be the source, not the software or the end users. The end users need education sure, but if you cut the sources off then there's nothing for them to watch in the grey/black market.
I'm surprised Dish is doing the lawsuit. I would have thought it would be someone like Time Warner, owner of HBO. They say Game of Thrones is the most pirated show on the internet. I'm not sure if thats good for publicity, or if that really cuts into potential revenue. My wife sells Lularoe clothing and I know I sometimes cringe, but sometimes you have to do giveaways and freebe's to build a customer base and excitement over the product.

When I first heard of "Home Media Center", I looked at HTPC (Home Theater Personal Computer). Didn't want to invest $$. Was looking for a way to store and stream (Movies...Music...Pictures) on my TV.
Started looking into alternatives, discovered that you could buy a Raspberry Pi for $35 Amazon product ASIN B01CD5VC92install Media Software (Kodi - Plex Media Server) on it and I would be able to stream my own personal content (Movies...Music...Pictures) on my TV. Like a HTPC for a fraction of the cost. I've been using this set-up for about a year. I absolutely love it.
While I read about the ways to Illegally use Kodi for other content (TV Shows - Current Movies) . Understanding their public stance (Don't Do It). I have NEVER tried any of the unapproved Add-Ons, and don't plan on it !!!
I am happy with my original purpose on going this route. Total invested cost ....less than $100. Added the 4TB WD My Cloud for extra storage, External Keyboard for convenience.

It is a losing battle and a waste of money. Look at the fight to shut down torrent sites over the last 10 years. A site goes down and it either comes back in a few months or three more take its place.
I'm not sure that Dish even has the legal standing to take anyone to court, they don't own the property rights, they're only a retransmitter of someone else's intellectual property. ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc can sue but I don't believe Dish can by itself. That would be like a movie theater chain trying to sue because somebody was selling a pirate copy of the film they're showing. The studio can sue but not the theater chain.
This, its just a platform other use.
Its like trying to ban the internet because thats how content is delivered.
Same can be said about Reddit, if you google certain reddit pages you can literally find whatever you need to find.
Charlie needs more money, don't blame Kodi for losing subs, if he has a problem then he should go after the right people and that is eBay/Amazon, they are the ones that sell the majority of kodi compatible devices.

In this case I don't think Amazon has anything to do with the Kodi end of things.
