I have a question....
If I were going to try some used dishes for fta,
1. would they work?
2. which would be the best?

How about lnbs from old primestar, dish or dtv? Are they good for anything?

If you can find an old primestar with the lnb all you'll need to add is some cable and a receiver for a single satellite. An 18" dish and lnb can be used to pick up NASA and some audio channels.

In my experimenting (no hacking), I put an inexpensive lnb (paid $20 for it on ebay) on an 18" direct TV Dish. On a clear, sunny day, I received many transponders, all very clear with excellent sound, including NY Net (horse racing & opera videos), KUEN TV, and news from Germnay. I am near Boston, Mass. I have a Coolsat 4000 Pro receiver.

that 18" KU dish is a fun tinker project but a cloudy day will nuke it. Its easy to get the stronger transponders near your true south. I have been able to get most of the 24/7 TP's on IA6 (my TS) and CCTV on G3 and KUIL on AMC4. Anything off of that and its tough. I didnt try IA8 as that satellite wasn't there at the time (IA8 just moved there a year or so ago) :)
