Docsis 3.0?

[h=5]Time warner wants to charge me $4/month for a modem rental fee. I can buy my own modem from their supported list which cost $60-$100. They are all docsis 3.0 modems. I currently have one they gave me that is docsis 2.0. I'm paying for about 20 Mbps. I can buy a docsis 2.0 modem for $15. At 20Mbps do I actually need docsis 3.0?[/h]

If you use a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, it has the potential to greatly reduce the bandwidth the provider uses to give you your 20Mbit connection. I am a big supporter of buying your own device and not paying rental fees. I would do the 3.0 device if it was my choice as it can save you an upgrade cost at a later date.

You would have the capability to go higher speed later withOUT changing the modem out. Also, most of the D3 modems support IPv6 which MAY be useful in the next few years.

I bought my own SBG6580- (D3/WiFi modem) (the same one the idiots at TWC were using).

I'd do the D3, but I'm a techie.

I would go with docsis 3.Most of them are backward compatible with docsis 2.Dunno about TW but Charter is going to be phasing out docsis 2.0 in the near future.

You should see marginally faster speeds and the speed will likely be more consistent.

I just went out and bought a motorola 6121 today, working like a charm, for some reason was only pulling between 8-18mbps and now between 36-40mbps much better

There are only a few approved modems on TW's list: motorolla sbg6580 (the only wifi on the list), sb6121, sb6141, netgear cmd31t and zoom 5341j.

The motorola SBG6580 rocks (although the WiFi is so so, the cable part is solid). I prefer the Cisco stuff since it's simultaneous dual-band.

You either pay extra for it or you rent from them. The direct benefits are that you will future proof your investment for at least 8 years. Let's do the math, 96 months rent @ $4 per = $384 for rental for your current modem. Another scenario is that you buy the D2.0 for $20 today, then tomorrow they tell you they are done with D2.0 to save costs and you either rent or buy a D3.0 from them. Should I do the math again?

The performance benefits mentioned previously seem small to some users, but many users would give up a limb to have that kind of improvement.

There are a couple nice whitepapers out there that explain the differences between D2.0 and D3.0. There are measurable advantages for the provider as well as the end user.

I was reading the description of the zoom on ebay and they say it is not a "telephony" modem. (Just to add confusion, the ad also says that the 5341j doesn't work for TW and TW doesn't support docsis 3.0.) I currently have a modem--ooma--wifi router daisy chained together. The ooma provides phone service. I don't need a telephony modem for the ooma to work, right?

Correct. The ooma doesn't need a telephony modem. I have mine on the 6580.

Half the life of the Docsis 2.0 implementation plus 2 years.
