ok, so I can hear Dolby Digital 5.1 only on pre-recorded discs, Not on programs I record from the Sat. receiver to the DVD recorder. So is there any point at all to have the Sat. Receiver connected with Optical cable to my DVD Recorder? What would I get with that connection that I couldn't if they were not connected that way?

You will be able to record the audio signal in its native format without having to convert it to analog and then back to digital if you were to connect the composite audio output (left and right) out of the sat receiver.

Nothing like pure, digital audio, (better separation, better S/N ratio) ;)
