I want to know since D* charges $5 a month for the dvr service, if you purchased a new dvr receiver with new access card and called D* to activate a new receiver but gave them non dvr model and receivers id from a non dvr receiver but the correct new access card #, will the dvr receiver work? Just technically speaking of course.

No...the receiver ID (and serial number) are married to the access card. If you give them an incorrect RID or Access card # you will receive an error code and no programming.
thanks for the reply but I thought they were only married after they are activated or previously activated. If you have a new non dvr device(never activated) with a new card and a new dvr (never activated) with a new card then nothing is married... still puzzled

You are correct, it's only married after you activate it.
If you gave them the wrong card for the rec. you wanted to use, they may question it, maybe not, then they would probably activate your NON DVR rec. with the card you placed in it...
To answer your question, the DVR funtions would NOT work as that rec. was not the one activated.
Not sure why you would do this, but thats probably what would happen.
D* has a list of cards that goes with what rec's. from the beginning, so they know what to expect when you give them the rec. ID.

Don't try to be so cheap and pay the $5.00 for the DVR service. It's better than trying stealing it.
What I meant by the incorrect RID was that if you give them a RID for a non-dvr, you will not get dvr service. D* can tell the make/model/serial number for each receiver based upon the RID.
Thanks iwc5893 for your great knowledge, I did not know that even if you actived a dvr withouth D*'s knowledge(using a different rid) that you will not get dvr service. Once again, thanks for your expertise.
All D* has ever asked me for when activating receivers is the access card number. I've never given them the receiver ID.
Even DVRs need to have the DVR function authorized based on the access card #, at which point the charge kicks in.
