I passed by a portable basketball hoop, and the light bulb in my head came on. Take a look @ the attached pic and tell me what you think I thought of that night. :)

P.S. Look @ the bottom of the assembly. Does NPRM come to mind? Has anyone tried this?

Replace the backboard with a flat panel so we can watch FTA while getting exercise?

OH. Heh. Joking aside -

Interesting observation. Fairly little modification required and possibly negligible drawbacks. It even appears the base might be sized to cinder block compatibility (as in the rear crossbar - it even might be common knowledge that these things are intended to be ballasted with cinders, but I would not know that). Mounting pole diameter and height needs some attention, but this falls under the "little modification" I mention.

Availability? A quick survey says these things are expensive new - so you'd want to find someone throwing one away or steal it from a neighborhood kid. ;) Engineered NPRMs can be had for cheap, depending on your definition of cheap. All considered, I've learned something and will be keeping an eye open for something else in the trash piles. :)

The ones I had seen, look a bit like the picture below.
Sitting along the curb, in various neighborhoods.
Sometimes folks throw them out, I assume .
You fill the base with water or sand to make 'em heavy.

Might be okay if I ran across one at a yard sale for $20, but when I looked 'em up on WalMart site, they are pretty expensive.

Actually, yours looks better, with that large stable base.
Mine might be good if you needed a plumb mast.
