:) I feel as I'm sure the majority of you guys also do that the FCC should go to DirecTV ... Dish & Voom and gather all their assets and redistribute them evenly.

Fair is fair ............... everybody should be on an equal playing ground.

61.5, 105, 110, 119, 121, 148 and 157 each should be divided into three.

P.S. .... Did you know that Charlie Ergen serves peanut butter and jelly sandwiches(on pumpernickel) at his board meetings? Now you know! :D

105 and 121 are a different type of satellite service (FSS) than the rest. Lower power and possible on many more birds (2º separation). IF you are going to include E*'s FSS then you better include the planned D* services via other FSS birds.

Your list also missed 101. Is that a freebee for D*? :)
You also missed the fourth active satelite provider, SkyAngel. Should they get 1/4th of the satellite space as well?

Plenty of space on 157º if D* and V* want to expand. I've heard SkyAngel wants space there too. And of course there are two more western slots left completely vacant --- 166º and 175º.

Much of the spectrum has been assigned based on the level of committment each provider has made to PROVIDING SERVICE.

Dominion Satellite "SkyAngel" has yet to launch a satellite. They lease transponders from E* to provide two full transponders of programming to the US. Their other six licenses are subleased to E* for their use. Again an easy single dish solution, all on 61.5º.

Cablevison/Rainbow "Voom" has drug its heels for years and years ... now they are up on 11 transponders plus 2 extras they are borrowing from the FCC ... all at 61.5º which makes single dish reception easy.

"DirecTV" has all 32 DBS licenses at 101º, 11 more at 119º and three at 110º, a total of 46 --- really good for a one dish solution.

EchoStar "Dish Network" is more spread out. The core is the 21 licenses on 119º and 29 on 110º. A solid 50 (more than D*) on a single two bird dish. Their wings add additional licenses ... 11 at 61.5º and all 32 at 148º plus the recently negotiated three at 157º. A nice total of 96 transponders. And now they are adding FSS birds.

But you knew all that, right? :)

Let's follow your suggestion. E* would have to launch a bird for 101º (even though it didn't make your list) or lease from D*. 1/4th of all transponder licenses per bird would also mean V* and Sky would need birds there or lease. The same with the other locations.

Each of the four providers would have 8 transponders at each location. So for D* to provide the same service they are doing at 101º-110º-119º -- 46 transponders -- they would need service on all six satellites. The one dish solution would go away. Three dishes at best.

Under your proposal E* wouldn't have enough transponders to keep their current Dish500 on the air. That uses 50 currently and across the six birds they would only get 48. The FSS birds you list (105º and 121º) would provide 64 total transponders ... sorry, but dropping from 96 to 64 is not good for E* at all.

And what, pray tell, will V* and SkyAngel do with eight transponders at each location? V* having 13 currently would need a two dish solution just to keep status quo. I suppose they could mirror their offerings --- or lease space to E* who would really need it. SkyAngel could be on every orbital position four times repeated ... if they put up all the birds! (And remember, they haven't launched their first bird.)

Sorry, but no. Your vision of ERA would be stupid and harmful to the entire industry. The providers have already been given "Equal Rights" by the FCC, with original free assignments of paired channels (a set on the eastern four birds and a set on the western four birds) then a public auction for the remaining channels assigned.

For the uses that the current four providers need no reshuffling is required. V* needs to press the FCC for 13 transponders at 157º to mirror their 61.5º feeds, and to keep their two temporary transponders at 61.5º. SkyAngel needs two transponders at 157º to mirror their feeds. Both of these companies "mirrors" intended for the west coast and Hawaii.
E* needs the remaining 17 157º transponders (they have three of the 17). Then they can launch "Dish500" service to Alaska and Hawaii using a total of 49 transponders. D* can push for all of 166º and 175º and launch a similar service. THAT would be "fair".

WTH! I thought this was going to be a porn topic. :eyesroll Bert, you are slackin'

And then once its all divided up evenly, we'll introduce more players and withdrawl the TPs and reassign them again? Right?

Speak for yourself. ANYONE that has built a business from the ground up (as DISH and DirecTV has done and VOOM is trying to do) will NOT agree with you.

Your "sense of fairness" has the same wierd twists that your anti-porn messages have.

Bert posts this often. Why it is "Fair" to take aassets away from one corporation and hand them to another is unclear.

So far the following count of transponder assignments have been lost by the respective carriers for failure to meet FCC deadlines associated with the granting of said licenses:
DirecTV - 27 transponders lost (on 148,157,166)
EchoStar - 22 transponders lost (on 175)
Voom - 11 transponders lost (on 166)
SkyAngel - 8 transponders lost (on 166)
(Numbers include companies purchased by DirecTV or EchoStar)

Those lost transponders were scheduled for auction, however the auction has been delayed.

EchoStar did get 11 transponders back recently... They applied the western 11 licenses to 148 and 157.
