Is there a fee for adding an external HD?

I saw that the 722DVR had a usb port so I plugged an external hard drive into it. When I plugged the hard drive in, the screen told me to call a phone number to add the drive. I called an in a couple of minutes, the drive was active.

I just looked at the Dish Network web site and it says there is a $40 fee for activating external drives. Nothing has shown up on my account yet but it has only been a few hours.

I would not be happy to find out about a fee after the fact. There was nothing on my DVR when I plugged in the drive about a fee and there was no mention of a fee when I called the automated system to add the drive.

This activation fee has been common knowledge for what seems like forever. There are a number of archived posts that deal with it.

I hope that you didn't have any data that you wanted to keep. The drive has been reformatted to a unix based file system and cannot be read by a PC.

To be honest, with you being a regular and with over 300 posts, its hard to believe that you were not aware of the fee.

Call them or go online to cancel the EHD.

Thanks for your response on the external device. No thanks for your opinion on what I should or should not already know.

Guess I'll be calling Dish anyway. I spent 5 hours moving the shows that I can't bare to be without onto the external hard drive to free up space. Watched one with no problems. Now when I check, the EHD does not list any shows although the space is still displaying as used. :(

Unplugged and replugged the drive and my precious recordings are back. Very scary!

I'm glad this was brought up. I have been looking to ask about the EHD activation. My question, for anyone that might know, is for the longest time on my system page the HDD Block H was Red. Now it's Green and the last time I had to call Tech Support I was asked to described that page and said that all the blocks were green, the TSR mumbled, "Oh that's right you have that activated". At the time I didn't think to ask "what's activated?" I was distracted by the parts that were not working.

So if the HDD block (H) is Green, am I activated to have an external hard drive attached or just that the box will accept one and then after it reformats the drive to DISH's protocol make me pay? Because Grandma needs one on her box to put all her Stargates and Atlantis' on. She constantly complains she has no room, but won't dump her gates. I had a drive that I was going to put on my 722 and it ended up on a computer where it's not working too well. I'm reading a lot of negative comments on 2.0 USB drives and that the 2.0 protocol makes them sleep or lose connection at the most inopportune times. I've seen it happen. Corrupt data is tolerable, but corrupt programming "Never!" This may explain your programs disappearing, the drive is dropping and the reappearing programming when you unplugged and plugged back in is forcing it to remount. I have had to do that to get my drive to remount. Can't use it for backups it "sleeps" or unmounts during and the process fails. Hmmm.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
