With TiVo you can just move them to a computer disk over ethernet with the TiVo Desktop software. There are also some programs out there that will remove the TiVo "copy protection". So, you can have perfect copies saved away on computer, viewable on the PC, or you can watch them on your TiVo (it will copy back). Note it does not remove the copy from the TiVo when you copy to a PC.

Also on my older HD TiVos I have changed out the HD to a larger one.

It's too much of a pain since our two desktops (the ones containing our PII, financial records, etc.) are behind an interior firewall and IPS, and only access a handful of trusted websites via proxy. Plus, all hard-drives use strong encryption (I'm something of a security/privacy zealot)....and transferring media files to or from a TivoHD is already slow enough. I was hoping to pickup a 2 TB Moxi last year, but I may have to finally build.an HTPC
