Dish would be a good choice for me if they offered EI and did not screw us west coast HD RSN markets with constant JIPs and no shows.
This.

I have a great look angle for Eastern Arc, I greatly enjoy my ViP722, having channels like BBC America in HD was nice, but as a hockey fan it was frustrating not watching certain match-ups because SD hockey is so painful to watch. Dish did alright with Center Ice, but this year DirecTV really pulled away on HD games especially once they got MSG/MSG+ back. One advantage Dish did have was HD MSNBC which was awesome for Olympic hockey coverage. ;)

The question you want to ask yourself is ......

Do you or would you watch any of the OTHER channels you say they have more of ...

Also, will you wish you stayed when D* passes DISH in HD count in the next month or so ?

I really don't care who has MORE HD, provided they are crisp quality channels. Also, what good are the other channels if they are nothing your interested in ?

Fwiw, theres about 50-100 channels now that D* has that I have NO NEED for.

Really...they will be passing Dish, I am guessing and hopeing that means some more "National" adds and not just premiums?

Sports I could care less about (sorry!), so that's not anything I'm even looking at. So, besides the sports issue, it looks like Dish has more to offer. Are you saying that Dish doesn't broadcast HD the same as D? If so that is an issue for me. It's just that in these times, saving money is big, even if I have to sacrifice a teensy bit. But, when I asked D when they would be getting my local channels, they had no answer, just "be patient" we'll get them as some point. Yeah, well Dish has them NOW, I've been waiting for years. We're in an area that we can't pick up anything OTA, we've tried with numerous antennas etc. I asked D, do you think it would be as long as a year? Couldn't tell me.
I really don't want to switch but unless I'm really not seeing something it seems like a no brainer. Besides the sports, is there any other reason I would hate Dish?

In regard to you local RSN, yes due to limited bandwith for RSN's there could be times that the game is broadcasted in HD, but you may see it in SD with Dish, plus you would miss out on other shows that broadcast in HD on RSN's becouse with Dish HD is only "Game only" but really its not becouse there will be games that wond be shown in HD, due to issues they have with RSN's

But no if you ok with some of the issues with Sports with Dish, I am thinking you would not have any issues.

As someone who has had both services, they are both good, one offering advantages over the other. As far as hd quality goes, there is no big difference. Some people get too hung up on this. You have to ask yourself which provider best fits your needs and in your case it sounds like dish does if they offer your locals and directv doesn't. I did not have any issue w/ directv until this free hd issue came up. I just don't understand how some people get it and others don't as myself unless you subscribe to premiums and most pay sports packages.

I just went thru and compared HD channels, Dish has far more. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna switch, think it's worth it.
Now, that is definitely true. With the next few weeks and the coming months to come, that may no longer be true

Just a warning Dish charges much more for receivers. First one is free second DVR 17 dollars Gets expensive quick. Dish has a few more HD channels but will change soon. Direct has a audio issue with little blips dropouts on HD I hope is fixed soon. If you like sports Direct all the way.
Both will try and out do the other and that's good for the consumer. Free market and capitalism rules.

Gotta love competition!!!! I'm on Dish putting in what I want to see cost, etc....am asking for two dvr's, one HD and one reg. SD and it's not putting in the 17 dollar charge, it is showing 6 for dvr service and 10 for a receiver, maybe because it's an SD?

The 1st receiver is included and since the 2nd one is SD only its less. The HD dual is $17 but I show a SD dual as $14.

Yeah SD receivers are less. The HD DVR's are 17. Direct everything is 5 if your interested.

Ok, that makes sense...right now only need hd in the "main" room so this all works for me!

For those who are able to get the "Free HD" Existing or new sub, are you still going to keep extra pack if you are not getting it free at this time and paying the 5.00 or when your promo ends

Something is wrong with what you are seeing. Any dual-tuner DVR is $17. I have a 625 and that is what I'm being charged.

I want "credited HD" for "life" too.

What the household currently has. DirecTV SD DVR+2 SD Boxes+Mas Ultra Deportes. We have 3 HD sets. Contract is up on November. Should we go for it?

i called directv today and they offered me the ten dollar credit per month with auto-bill pay for 24 mo.

So far there is no mention of allowing existing subs to get this.. NEW customers only

I cannot believe DIRECTV is not letting existing customers buy into the program. It seems like it would be a big "sticky" to promote customer loyalty.

Yea, well DTV can kiss my a** if they will give this deal to new customers while they ignore old customers like me. We have been considering canceling DTV and going with OTA and internet broadcast....not sure what's stopping me form totally canceling.

Just want to share my experience regarding this. Currently I have Choice Extra with HD. One HD receiver and one SD.

I called Directv last Friday to cancel the service (not intented to, but paying $88, taxes included, a month is too much for me) since my 2years ended couple months ago. I did mention the Dish HD free for life offering over the phone and I had a feeling that they were somehow expecting this. So their counter offer was $20/mo credit for the Choice Extra, AND, $10/mo on the HD (same as waiving the HD fee). Both credits will be running for 12 months, WITHOUT any committment at all. Then I just got my bill yesterday. The total is now $55 (taxes included). Good deal.

I think they played very nice here. $55 is a good enough deal (or on par with other's discount offering to new customers). It won't save me any by switching over.

PS: the Specialist seems very knowledgeable regarding my questions for the laggy HD receiver. Even though her solutions didn't solve the issue (I had known), she could actually answer some technical questions as well. Very impressive.

You could cancel or you could call up and get free HD for 24 months.
