I started my DirecTV service in May of 09 and I have an HD-DVR on my HDTV well my uncle has an old Gen 6 RCA receiver that he used to sub to he canceled in feb/04 he was still using the HU-Card at that time, DirecTV did send him a P4 Card to replace the HU but he never did the swap and canceled instead. He said I could buy the receiver & P4 Card (still stuck to the swap letter) for $20.00 as a second unit this would suit my needs just fine. Can I still activate this? I have heard from a few people that DirecTV no longer uses the P4 Card.

why would you want an rca receiver at all? go to best buy, spend 70bucks and get a d12, much better receiver, and this way you dont need to worry about the card. If his new card does still work, d* will probably make you get a new one to put it on your account regardless, so now your up to 40. whats another 30 to get a new one?

The P4 cards are no longer working anyways, so if you did decide to use the RCA, they would send you a new card and charge you the standard $ 20 .

Not sure what your intentions are for this recvr, but you would get a much newer and more divers recvr by getting the new generations.

You can get the D12, if you want a basic recvr, I think it's SD only, if you want to go HD you want a H series recvr, H20 at least, probably not available anymore at BB, but the newer H21 or 23's are available.

I have a HR22-100 now and I actually was thinking of a non DVR HD receiver. I think I will pass on Gen 6 as its to old now I guess.

So I was back over at my uncles and I told him that I was going to go and get a new non DVR HD receiver and that I didn't think that the P4 Card he has could be activated anymore. Well then he goes and pulls out another card, it is wrapped in a DirecTV sealed plastic, from what I can tell it has two strips of grey on the sides of the card and blue in the middle with the word DirecTV on the card. I don't know what kind of card that is but it looks nothing like the card that I got with my HR22-100 so I assume its old & out dated as well? I guess DirecTV sent it to him 6 months after he cancelled LOL.

Not necessarily.

What I don't get is why would DirecTV send him a different card 6 months after he cancelled?

They have several different cards out at the same time, it doesn't really matter what the picture is, if the program is wrote to the card correctly and using an updated chip.

IF they wanted to, they could go back to the Football PICTURE on the next gen card, really doesn't matter what is ON the card picture wise.

Why would they shut off the P4 stream and not use those cards anymore if the hackers never got into them? To try to stay ahead of the hackers doing a card swap before hackers can get into them again? Wasn't P3 the HU Football cards? How many versions came after P3?

I went and purchased a H21 HD Receiver from my local electronic store, although this receiver is silver where my HR 22-100 is a nice glossy black. The guy I delt with at the store was telling me that the card my Uncle has sealed in DirecTV plastic is a P5/D1 card and that DirecTV was having issues with the P4 working with some receivers namely DVR's, and that they sent it to him by mistake.

I think the P4 was the Football card. I think.

There have been about 4-5 different cards since then, but I don't know if they just have different pictures on them, or if they have different Chips.
Never looked that closely into it.

My understanding of it (im new to this so bare with) is the HU (Football Card) was the P3? The P4 is a purple card with arrows going from bottom to top & I believe it also has the DirecTV cyclone symbol on the card, and the P5/D1 according to the guy at the store is the card with the grey stripes and blue in the middle with the name DirecTV on it. I don't know about the ones I have in my HR22-100 & H21.

Does it really matter what card they are using now, the P3/4 generation has been shut off.
D* will gladly send you a new card to activate the unit if you decide to do that.

The P4 card is still in use but I do not know if they will still activate them but I suspect they will. Quote: "P4 cards were introduced in 2002 and are currently still in use. P4 cards are labeled "Access Card: 4."

You can read all about it here:
DirecTV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The P4 must have been the one that "replaced " the football card then. It's been awhile since then. My mistake....
