Globecast updates?

my globecast receiver has not accepted the updates. i am not a current subscriber and use it for fta. there web site says to: change to channel 1 then power down its supposed to have bars running then goes to the clock but mine never gets past the bars for days now. what does the updated smart card look like mines all white. do you need to be a active customer for the update?
 
Seems you need the new card/sub for the update, I have also tried to update the software on mine and it just scrolls 111111111. ... Been that way for the last few days.
 
well when i called globecast they said to get service i must buy a new system! they will not activate used! they would not give me any tech help. i will try again tomarrow to see if i can get a better response. i got the same reply when asking about wildblue internet. but later was told they would work with me.
