a few more details would be helpful like the existing setup (receiver, dish setup, etc)

to Satelliteguys slinkey!If you have a receiver, it has only one tuner and won't let you record one program while watching another. The output of the receiver/dvr can connect to the recorder.
I think he means he wants to record to a standalone HDD recorder.

Yes, that's what he means. I was just letting him know that he can't watch one thing and record another with a receiver. As far as the connections, use the best one you have. HDMI, component, S-video, composite, in that order.
