HDNET to become AXS TV; will be available in AT 120 and up

I bet Spike would love to have those shows...(please, please, please)

Spike can have them. That's one channel I never watch. Why does "male-oriented" always seem to mean "moronic, simple, and vulgar" to the entertainment industry?

I generally watch HDNet only for the concerts and music docs. Their stuff is usually better than Palladia's, which is supposed be music-centric. I assume there will be even more now. AEG is a huge concert promoter, probably bigger than LiveNation.

Everybody looks at the past with "rose colored glasses". There just as many, if not more "musicians" that were just singers with songwriting teams and studio musicians behind them as there are today. And most of that music back then was forgetable pop music just like most of today's music is. We're becoming our parents. Soon we'll be telling kids to get off our lawns! ;)
Yes and no. Pure pop singers had the studio musicians and professional songwriters doing the heavy lifting, as they do now. Pop has generally been the drivel of music. I'm sure that Kab was referring to the wider collection of popular music. (And, yes, I realize the word "pop" derives from "popular". However, in musical terms, it refers to a specific type of the simplest form of popular music.)

Back then, there was no sampling, no spinning, no beat box, no rap/hip-hop, none of which involves any actual musical talent. Those are all technical skills, not artistic talents. You don't need to be able to sing in order to recite a rhyme. You don't need to be able to play an instrument like a guitar or keyboard, with their almost infinite number of chords and notes to program a sequencer. You don't need to be able to compose a melody in order to sample somebody else's.

While there are certainly some decent rock acts in the last couple of decades, there isn't nearly the number of quality acts or songs as from the previous couple. Also, R&B is boring and repetitious compared to the R&B Aretha, Diana, Kool & The Gang, etc. It puts me to sleep the way sleeping pills like Dave Matthews and John Mayer do. Why do frat boys and sorority girls, the most partying people on the planet, listen to such boring, snooze-inducing, low energy crap?

Not talking about disco. There were great bands/artist. The Doors, Jimmy Hendrix, hell even Elvis and the Beatles. Back when people would actually play instruments.

Already there. Music today flat out SUCKS. Been finding new old music to listen to. Don't think we are ever going to get another Kurt Cobain or Layne Staley.

Seems like all channels are going to hell in a hand basket. These are the bands of today:

live 24/7 is possible if you can find acts around the world to broadcast. There are concerts in Hawaii, Japan, Korea, China, Australia, Europe, etc. There are some great all entertainment shows in every TV market worldwide. Why not show bands and singers at clubs , worldwide. I remember 1 year they showed New Years eve celebrations in every time zone. There were 24 hours of music and fireworks. I believe it was in the old C-band satellite days. Sign 24 clubs , 1 in each time zone and show 1 hour of their main act each night would do it. If no clubs in a time zone , do 2-3 hours of the prime time acts. You could keep the channel live just by showing community theater or College Music performances( Masters and PhD performances) from around the world.

I'm not talking about disco either. Someone with no talent except looking good and having a decent voice all while being pushed by a top songwriting team/record label has been going on since the 1920's.

Yah, my parents bitched about The Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin and Alice Cooper too when I was a kid. And Kurt Cobain is seriously over-rated. I always thought the Red Hot Chili Peppers were/are far better than Nirvana. I guess being depressed makes one a giant among men. Although I did like Cobain's sense of humor.

Mark Cuban said at Team Summit they he wants the channel to be LIVE 24/7.

I think that going to be hard to do.

He also said he wants it heavily tied to social media. Well here we are Mark. :D

Isnt there a channel called youtoo i saw on cable that was heavy on social media

There are great bands and artists today that can play instruments and write their own stuff. The 50s, 60s, 70s all had songwriters (like Carole King before she became an artist of her own right) that would write material for prominent and not as prominent artists to use. This whole... "things were better in my day" is nothing but a whimsical and incomplete recollection of history.

Steven Wilson is one of the best sound engineers and music writers. Over the Rhine is one of the better acts on the planet and can compete with anyone you can name from the past.

Bad music from the 40s, 60s, 80s, and today sucks. It all sucks. The good stuff doesn't suck. You may not like it, but you are not the barometer for good music.

Seems like all channels are going to hell in a hand basket.
That they are, at least in the sense that bad television is typically profitable television, which is unfortunate.

BLASPHEMY!!!!

but you are not the barometer for good music.

i am on my radio, lol!!!!! everyone has different tastes. Rap (NWA, 2 live) was good, hip-hop not so much. good music is out there, just not easy to find.

That they are, at least in the sense that bad television is typically profitable television, which is unfortunate.

agreed. it is really annoying when they talk about how profitable reality shows are (little overhead to produce), yet tv prices continue to rise and there are constant contract disputes.

I can't agree.
No music as whole rivals that of the 60's and 70's and perhaps the early 80's. For the most part Rock or classic Rock today isn't Rock as far as I am concerned. The melody of Motown may never be equaled. Music that came from the turmoil and tremendous events of that time, horrid race relations and resulting violence even violence at a Democratic Presidential nomination, the Vietnam War, a President being assassinated, the Cold War and bomb shelters in homes, Manned spaced flight and man reaching the moon, and even the prevalent hard drug use lead to music unrivaled in meaning and sound. There are plenty of great songs since if that's what you mean, but as a whole no era is like that in music. Even 911 as horrific as it was, did not affect this country to the extent of some of the events I mentioned. The Vietnam War alone was such a dividing event, unless you lived in that time it's hard to understand how it affected everything, in this case the music. No protesting since holds a candle, no war was so polarizing since or maybe before, and that produced music that you may not realize sometimes is about that war. Ditto Race relations. But you didn't have to live through that time to realize how great and what history is behind the music from then. Marvin Gay's "What's Going On" is an all encompassing summation, that could not have been written or performed with the same feeling now. It's often said the best artistry especially music comes from personal pain. Thankfully in general we don't have the pain like during those times. But it's why there was a Janis Joplin and Piece Of My Heart.

I'll disagree. The thing that has changed is that radio stations have monopolized and listening to "good" music on the radio is extremely hard. But these days, there are a ridiculous number of labels, groups can produce their own music with more ease and release it without producing a single physical CD. The "good stuff" is out there, you just have to search for it because it isn't on the radio, except Muse. I can't understand how a technically complicated group like Muse became so popular. I suppose it's the looks... they are a good looking Rush.

The whole 60's/70's, etc... whimsy forgets the garbage music that was produced in those times as well.

Wait... how in the heck did this thread get to this topic?

I don't think anybody is saying there is no good music in the last 20 years. (If they are, they'd be wrong.) But, on the whole, there was way more good music in rock, pop, and R&B in the 60's, 70's, and 80's than in the 90's, 00's, and 10's.

In Rock we had The Beatles, Stones, Who, Cream, Kinks, Pink Floyd, Led Zepelin, Black Sabbath, Queen, David Bowie, Metalica, Rush, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Guns n Roses, The Ramones, Talking Heads, Todd Rundgren, Frank Zappa, etc.

In R&B there was Aretha, Diana, Kool and the Gang, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, THE ENTIRE MOTOWN THING.

There were Singer/Songwriters like Billy Joel, Elton John, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Cat Stevens, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Neil Young

I don't even like all of them. But, I understand and appreciate their talent. And, I named only a few of the top of my head. There are is nothing to compare to that amount of musical talent from the 90's onward, although the 90's did have some that started in the 80's, such as Nirvana, RHCP, NIN, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and others.

For a sampling of current rock and pop, one only needs to watch some of the festival concerts on Palladia. One boring band or singer after another. And the names get stupider and stupider. Kings of Leon, Queens of the Stone Age, Death Cab for Cutie. The one modern act with a decent name, Coldplay, just plain sucks. Whiny pretentious hipster rock.

So, yeah. Music was better back then.

:

What garbage that came from then, at least had MELODIES. I'd rather have to listen to "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes" for the rest of my life as opposed to ANYTHING from the Black Eyed Peas and the like!!!!

I hope deafness is a 3rd choice.

Nope!! Actually heard it the other night and it brought an adolescent smile to my face. And a big box of memories of my Jr. High School days.
