Hopper S229 / S230 Feedback!

Mine just showed up today, very fast. Now I just need my install lol.

I wonder if the tech will know what it is, or should I install it after he leaves. I guess it depends on the software.

I had complained earlier in another thread about not having S230 but I now see your point of view. It is better to have reliable software without all the features than to have buggy software with features. I guess I can wait for it to be fixed.

If it were only the OTA dongle you might be right. This was just the latest in a long line of issues I have had with the hopper and hopper software which have turned out to be known bugs. Each have been reported to a Dish technical support person who each time I reported I would have to repeat all of my receiver/joey/software information to. I was then told it was being sent to engineering and I would be given an update on the situation which I still have never received. Then there was the time all of my subs disappeared for no apparent reason and I spent over an hour with tech support trying to troubleshoot. Went through the same drill. What are your receiver numbers and software versions? Seems like Dish should know this since they delivered and activated the equipment. Bottom line, they never figured it out and I did not have any more time to waste with them. They wanted to charge me to send a tech out to fix their issue and it was going to take two weeks to get someone here. Sure, that is fine with me. Later in the day I was able to finally figure it out and fix it myself.

In response to your comment about reading the boards. I read these boards almost every day. I don't recall there being any discussion prior to or on the day the OTA went on sale that we would have to wait for a download. If you read Scott's original review it indicated this was a plug and play. It was many posts later and also in a separate topic that the software update started to be discussed. Plus for those who are not savvy enough to read these boards or are not even members here there are no instructions or any mention at all by Dish on their site when a customer orders that they will not be able to use the OTA until their receiver receives an update at an unknown date and time. If a customer calls tech support and wades through the phone tree and finds someone who knows what they are talking about they are told to be patient and they will eventually be able to use their equipment.

Great. im going out of town for a week two days after my install. If 230 is not working OK with the adapter, Im going to leave it out until I get back.

I'm in CT, but I don't think location has anything to do with it. The hopper serial number does, and apparently my number was called....

Could you tell us the 6 digits after the R on your Hopper (eg. R188114). If they do this incrementally, I'm trying to guess when mine will get the update. I wouldn't think they would push any out tonight, but I didn't think they would push any last night either. Thanks!

According to DishOnline, my Hopper got S230 last night. NOW I'll order that USB dongle and install an OTA antenna (just to see what I can get).

2H/1J upgraded around 4AM. Everything working nicely.

All equipment seems a bit more responsive when navigating the settings, guide, menu.

Well put. You beat me to it.

It's amazing how DISH gets a pass from some of its actions. The digital tuner is sold and marketed for use with the Hopper, not for Hoppers with S/W S229 and above. What about the pre-release testers and the selected beta testers from right here on this forum? Was that a fruitless endeavor? Is the testing methodology flawed because enthusiasts test with "rose colored glasses"? The wait for the OTA dongle should have included the wholesale release of supporting software. The only disclaimers on the limitation of their use are rumors on the Internet. I'm sorry if you feel DISH is justified on relying on the word put out by user's experiences with their products.

It seems DISH has made missteps in the past on releasing items that were not quite ready for stable (let alone top notch) performance. It could be a cycle where they are getting used to the acceptance of these shortfalls, so to the corporation evolves with a sense of acceptability for premature products being released.

Lets face it, I bet most that know right now about the module, are forum people, not J6P. So, most of us ordering it know we need a certain SW version to use it, and how Dish SW rolls out. We are OK with it.

Then there are the rest, that know all of the above, and just need to bitch.
