I have direct tv H/D using a HR23 receiver and cox cable basic service, with no cable box. I read that I cannot connect the cable line into the HR23 receiver because of similar MHZ. If that is true, how can I connect my cable. I tried connecing it directly to my tv and it works, however, I cannot switch between direct tv and cable. Please help!

The cable goes into the antenna port of your TV. The DVR connects via HDMI or component. If you have set up your remote control, the TV INPUT button should switch between them.
I guess we need to know what kind of TV you have.
As Bob said, just switch between the inputs of the TV. In your case the RF (cable) and whatever input you use for the DVR.
