I was reading up on Stern moving to satellite radio to escape censorship and came upon this tidbit:

"Broadcasters are asking congress to "level the playing field" so they can be competitive with subscriber services such as satellite and cable."

In otherwords, no more Playboy Channel, or uncensored movies (except in movie theaters) broadcast if Congress allows the FCC to broaden its oversight to cable and satellite :shocked .

We all need to keep an eye on this if and make sure that Congress doesn't allow the FCC to broaden its powers.

From the Washington Post:

(FCC Chairman) Powell said in an interview yesterday, "It is not surprising that notable performers and journalists are turning to a medium that allows them to paint with a broader palette."

More programs and performers will migrate to pay cable and satellite channels unless Congress holds them to the same decency standards as broadcasters, Powell maintains.

if there's a known quantity in the universe it's the cowardice of politicians. they won't dare mess with joe blo's ability to watch "mainstream" or soft core porn in the comfort of his home.

Yeah,

There are reasonable technological mechanisms that keep the smut and filth on DBS or Digitial Cable away from those to don't want to see it (or have their kids be able to see it). Broadcast TV and Radio were designed back when the world was decent, so its open to all.

No More Bush !

NO MORE BUSH !

Pretty soon all we'll be able to watch is FoxNews and The Hour of Power.

Quite possible. And, continuing the current drift to the right, FoxNews will be considered a mouthpiece of lefty liberals in the Republican party.

I took that quote as they were wanting the FCC to ease up regulations on their broadcasts. They do need to be able to compete. With parental lock available on most new TV sets (v-chip), FCC regulation on broadcast TV is really just unnecessary anymore.

Yeah  Tell that to the religious right-wing of this country that started all of this nonsense in the first place. Republican lawmakers are not going to risk splintering the base of their party to appease these broadcasters that are now worried that all the $$$ talent is fleeing to greener pastures.

The only thing going for satellite is that the signals are encoded. The gov't may own the spectrum the signal travels on, but we can't just put up an antenna and receive the signal like AM/FM/UHF/VHF etc. If you are receiving the signal in an understandable format then you have chosen to receive it i.e. you can't just innocently stumble upon it with a scanner.

No more Bush?

You really believe this has anything to do with Bush? If so, you are beyond naive.

The so-called "Decency" crusade is a popular cause amongst politicians of all creeds, including Democrats. Do you think if Gore had been president, the FCC would not have done the exact same thing? In fact, if memory serves, I believe Stern was fined by the FCC during the Clinton administration.

I don't think it is "beyond naive" to say that Republicans, generally, are more conservative on standards of propriety and morality than Democrats.

Wrong - memory does not serve you well:
1) See report on thesmokinggun.com

2) See bio of FCC chairman Powell:
http://www.fcc.gov/commissioners/powell/mkp_biography.html

Since Powell took over the American air-waves have been subject you a deep-cleansing, which involves removals of nipples, foul language, etc. However my baby can still tune in at any time during the day and find people getting killed on at least 25% of the channels. Talk about getting the priorities wrong.

Well, by all means... Don't miss an opportunity to blame Bush for something.

Because, let's not forget, Dubya is in charge of the entertainment industry and decides the content of all entertainment product. I understand that he even coded some of the object icons in the "Grand Theft Auto 3" video game. If anybody tells you that Hollywood is the baliwick of liberals, remind them that Dubya and evil Republicans dictate the ways in which your baby's mind is warped.

Dubya is a busy man. First he snuck into the Clinton administration and tricked him into passing NAFT.

Then he flew planes into the Trade Center so that he could chase away American jobs. Sure, he turned around and propped the economy back up, but he hasn't created enough jobs to match the height of the bubble economy of 1998, so he's really begging companies to take their jobs elsewhere because that's good for... Well, I'm sure it's good for somebody and it probably has something to do with Halliburton.

Then he ran around and forced everyone to join Unions so that the value of any remaining American manufacturing jobs weren't competitive in a global economy.

Then that dumbass actually BELIEVED what Putin, the CIA, and Iraqi defectors were telling him. What a dumbass. Oh, never mind that everybody else believed that too, Dubya should have known better. We should hold our leaders to a higher standard. If aren't omniscient, then they shouldn't be in office!

And now, that bastard forced his pal Howard Stern to move to Satellite radio so that OTA broadcasters could whine for more relaxed decency standards IN A SECRET PLOT TO CREATE A BACKLASH THAT would dampen the standards for pay providers.

Freakin' EVIL genius, that guy. He must be stopped.

BLAME BUSH! BLAME BUSH! BLAME BUSH!

(The line at Starbucks was unusually long this morning... What can I do? I'll tell you...)

BLAME BUSH! BLAME BUSH! BLAME BUSH!

Who should be our leader???

ANYBODY BUT BUSH! Yes, that means even Osama. That means Jacque Chirac. That means an dyslexic incontinent monkey. Brother, I mean ANYBODY!
