how do youn enter the zip code when on the appropriate screen ???

Hit the number buttons. I don't mean to sound trite, but that's how it works.

chip- I`m doing something wrong:
- info and test
-more system info
-scroll to zip code
-hit SELECT NOTHING HAPPENS, still 0000 on screen after entering numbers

You don't do it there. That is the INFO section. I think it's done in the initial sat setup of the receiver or you can do it in the sat/ant section section of the settings menu by running the sat setup again.

...and FYI the zip code does not do anything except give you the dish alignment coordinates which you can also get from dishpointer.com.
To set the box to receive your locals, you have to call DirecTv and give them your service address. You can't do this without calling.

The one exception is if you are using am AM21 for off-air stations. Then the zip code(s) are input as part of antenna setup.
