the hdmi connection will be sensed by the unit
if the tv is off, hdcp can block the signal

its to prevent copying, exactly what you are doing with the recorder

So, I tried it out last night, had it record an hour after I went to bed and it didn't turn anything off. So, as long as I stay within the DirecTV box limit of 4 hours (or change it) I could actually record with the TV off. However, it's unlikely I would do much of that since I would also need to schedule within the 4 hour limit and remember to put the box on the right channel before I turned the TV off. Plus, I have my remote to turn both the box and the TV off at the same time, so I have to use the TV's remote to only turn off the TV. But, that means I could offload to the recorder with the TV off.

So, now my question is, what about all the stuff I currently have recorded on my DVR. Can they transfer that over to the new box, or will I need to offload it before I get the new box?

So, I guess I've got some work to do before I change boxes. I have a whole season of Criminal Minds on there among other things. I have until the end of the year to do it. Thanks.
