It does not erase it, the to do list is saved on the hdd. Once you connect a new drive, you have to redo the todo list so its saved. Once you disconnect the ext, the original todo list is still saved on your internal hdd.

I agree that its a pain in the buttocks to redo your TODO list & Fav lists BUT it is worth it if you ask me.
I swapped out the INTERNAL hard drive yeseterday to a 1 TB drive & I now have LOTSA room for all those shows & movies in HD. We already have like 16 hours of HD recorded & it still shows 95% available. Swapping the internal was easy as pie, too - once I found the right size bit (T-Star10) to remove the 5 screws off of the cover.:up:up

WHY would you remove a internal HD in a unit that is not owned by YOU ?

Particularlly when it is soooo easy to add an EHD without any of the hassles of voiding the warranty you agreed to with D*

This is soo a pain in the... Directv should enable dual hard drive so you would not need to disconnect the external drive..

That would but only AFTER they officially support the addl. HD's, I don't think they are officiallly covered at this time.
I would imagine that D* would sell EHD options so they can have another revenue stream.

Because I do own the unit & I didn't agree to any warranty & I don't have to have another piece of equipment in the TV cabinent :D

It's an HR-20 700, but it isn't under any sort of lease agreement or protection plan.

If you paid $ 0- 300 you do NOT own it.
If you paid $ 800 and got it from D* you probably own it.
If you bought it off EBAY you probably DON"T OWN it either.

But why would anyone spend that kind of money when they will lease it to you and cover any problems.

Startup hangs

What is the setup process for setting up a ESATA external Seagate Technology - FreeAgent™ Pro 750 gig drive on a HR 21 unit. Here is what I did. I connected the two cables. I did a "reset" from the menu. I did a reset using the "red reset button" on the front of the unit. I even did a "reset everything" from the menu. When I do a reset I noticed the drive powers off and back on. I would thing that is correct. I tried two different ESATA cables from two different manufactures. One from BestBuy and the other was a PPA 5 ft. eSATA to eSATA Cable Model 3831. With any of the resets the startup process gets to the Direct TV display screen 1 of 2 and it hangs. That doesn't seem normal to me. What is happening upon reset? Does it have to reformat the drive? I left it on for hours and it never goes though the startup process.

Is my cable selection just been bad?

Thanks for any help.

ESATA Drives

I looked back at the first page of this thread and Jason talked about him using a Seagate Technology - FreeAgent™ Pro drive without a problem.

Should I return the drive or try a new SATA cable?

Help...I have a 1TB drive that is starting to whine and make some noises. I think it's going to go. Is there any way to save my programing before it fails?

Can I hook it and a new drive to my PC and do a ghost copy to the new drive? I have 500meg of saved programming on the drive.

Any help is appreciated.

Ghost might work. I have never tried it so I have no idea if it would or not.
