L4.41 Software

If you choose to group, can you choose to ungroup? I'm hesitant to push that button till somebody tells me I can change it back.

It looks simple and self-explanatory, which is why I'm afraid of it. :D

You can change back and forth over and over. I sure hope that this is just the beginning of this feature. It has so much potential

Yes you can ungroup and then set the ordering back to something you like if you don't like it alphabetical.

What I said about 2 years ago was to have a different type of grouping. Where you could setup certain folders for different people. Example: Kids always want kids shows recorded. What would be nice is when you select something to record you can tell it weekly, daily, etc and then also tell it what group to put it in. So when we go to our recordings we can change to whatever groups we setup. I hate scrolling through tons of childrens programs just to find mine in the list. Does that make sense?

You don't seem to understand the function of WEP (or WPA, WPA2, etc). But no, the hard-wired ethernet connection will NOT use WEP (nor does it have any need to).

... just a simple question since I do not hard wire anything to the router but the modem (of course).

Thank you for your answer, anyway. ;)

This may be a little silly question but I have been trying to keep up but don't understand one thing.

If I connect my 622 to my wireless network and disconnect its phone line, can it also allow my 211 in a room with no phone line to call home via Dishcomm?

I think that's what Dish Network is trying to do here but we're not there yet. The 211 doesn't have the software yet for Dishcomm only the 622s.

It makes sense and I agree that would be a great feature as well as the already mentioned abilty to have the shows in the group listed by date.

These folders are going to be very helpful on the external hard drive. They will be available there too ...... right?

Thanks. I'll wait and hope they do get that going. Running a phone line in there would be a pain but I do want to get off of the audit nazi hitlist.

I would hope that *where* the recordings are, be they on the internal or external drive, it will be transparent to the user. When one hits "My Recordings", it should list ALL recordings on all (attached) drives.

I wonder if the Groups will group recordings from both sources together or separate them.

Maybe it would be good if there were multiple Group Sorts, so that you could toggle between:
- Alpha
- Date
- Porno (or other Genre)
- TV1 & TV2
- Which Guide was used to Create Recording (All Channels, All Sub, All HD, Head of House, Spouse; Nr 1 Son, Nr 1 Daughter, etc...)
- Which External Device (Especially if you can daisy chain a few USB Drives!)

Network connections.
Several times it been said to get a gaming device to hook up the 622 to the network as wireless. I don't have any gaming devices, but suspect you can add your encryption key for WEP to the gaming device. Maybe I can connect the Bridge to a computer, program the bridge, and then connect it to the 622 and connect to a Wireless Router. With the encryption, performance might decrease. But without encryption enabled, I should be able to control any in range without effort.

I have a couple of Linksys G Bridges laying around somewhere, haven't used them in awhile since I stay away from wireless, but may have to try it out. I don't remember if I use to put the keys in the Bridge, or the laptop/desktop connected to it.

Well... Will have to play around later and see whats up.

If you hard wire the ethernet port and the wireless network uses WEP, does the ethernet feature has a way to enter the WEP encryption?
Sean?

I think I may understand what you are asking (if I'm wrong just ignore me as my wife often does).

I don't think the Broadband (Ethernet) feature of the ViP unit will allow you to do much other than verify the IP, MAC addresses, gateway etc. You would need a web browser to access the management console of the wireless gateway to configure the WEP.

That said, connect the wireless temporarily to any PC, access it's console and configure the WEP from that. Then hope settings remain in some sort of non-volatile memory and don't get wiped when you transport it and connect it to your satellite receiver.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Spence

Sean, the point of WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc encryption is to protect the "free" access that wireless routers provide. When your router is on, it's broadcasting to the world and anyone within range can attach to it and you can't control this. Hence, you put a "lock" on it, encryption, and only you know they "key". Get it ??

Encryption isn't needed on the hard-wired ports because generally you can see who's physically plugged into your router (or I would hope). In order to "steal" your connection via a hard-wired port, someone has to get in your house and plug into it.

no upgrade here either, but I'm in the 8300 range for receiver number. I'm not doing anything with the external hard drive or network anyways so no real hurry. :)

I had a problem this morning with my receiver coming out of standby. It was supposed to record the Good morning America and when I hit select it was recording the show but only when I turned it on. So at 7:25 it started to record instead of 7:00. THen of course I hit stop, to stop recording, since it wouldn't let me start over from the beginning. It continued to show a red dot recording on the show in the banner , but the receiver wasn't showing the red dot. I couldn't hit swap or pip or anything. So REBOOT. I hope this doesn't happen every morning .

If you have not got the software yet, then try this trick which MAY help it download.

While watching TV, press PIP, then Swap and then PIP again to turn PIP off.

Now put your box in standby for about a half hour.

Sometimes the second tuner is sleeping and this wakes it up. The software is normally downloaded on he second unused tuner. :)
