lnb help?

i need help setting a dtvhd dish...i have set the dish and cant find any satellite with my signal meter (birddog)....i tried a multi-switch ka/ku 1 outlet lnb and a sl5-p built in multi-switch lnb with 4 outlets....do i need a ASL to find signal with this lnb...i put a triple-feed multi-switch lnb on the dish and got a good signal....can i get hd with the triple-feed....is my multi-switch ka/ku lnb and the sl5 bad or am i doing wrong.
