think I might change to D*V and was wondering if there is a benifit of owning my own equipment? Or would leasing be a better option?

Also will there be any hassles from them if I do own my own hardware.

Does any one have some good tips or sites I might visit to help with my install? My DN setup was installed by a tech.

Looking for 3 rooms HD and 1 room SD. All rooms to have a DVR.

Here is my list of components I think I need.

Slimline AU9 dish
3 HR22 rec
1 r22 rec.
500 feet of RG6 cable and 20 conectors. with striper and crimp tool.
Signal meter.

TIA

Jetman,

Welcome to the site !

Are you planning on doing this job yourself ?

If so, where are you getting the rec'r and the Slimline dish ?

Why would you want to pay for this stuff when D* will do the install free ?

500 ft of coax ?

Thats a pretty pricey job if your buying all that just for this one install ...
Like I said, D* does it for free.

Slimline AU9 dish
$ 100

3 HR22 rec
approx $200 each, $ 169 at Costco's

1 r22 rec.
$ 85 at Costco, fwiw, I would NOT get the R-22

500 feet of RG6 cable
$50 - 100 depending what you get and where.

20 conectors. with striper and crimp tool.
$ 50-100 depending on quality you buy.

Signal meter.
$150 -$ 750 depending on one you decide to buy.

Labor ..... , placing the dish, running coax, setting up your rec'rs

Whats your time worth to you ?

Your high on some of your prices. The cheapy meter from e*ay is $20.00

All I am trying to do is not loose the $497.00 there charging for the DVR's. If I move on I can sell then for something. Lease and say good bye to all of it. I just don't think that right for D* and E* to do this. All they should charge is a lease fee. I will not get a credit for any of the hardware at all.

The 2 cable providers never charged me for the box. I just paid the monthly least fee!

My prices
hr22=$140.00
r22-$60.00
dish-$80.00

I have a close freind that has an ace hardware store. I was qouted $100.00 for the RG6 and connectors. Still working on the tools.

I pay myself with a beer and a steak. When I finish. If something isn't right I have my wife yell and scream. We both feel better. I don't site on the coach and eat chips. If a days work save's me $50.00 then I feel I did OK. The days that cost you are the days I hate.

What else would I do with my time. I like to tinker and such.:)

thanks

Except you CANNOT BUY any of these rec's outright, they are all LEASES.

If true then D* and E* are both crooks!! If I pay for the receiver shouldn't it be mine?? Or have I missed something??

maybe I will go back to cable o wait. There crooks too! he he.

Really if you have a link to that info i would like to read it.

Thanks for all the help.

Look at is as not a purchase price but an upgrade charge. Using D* as an example, you can get a standard def receiver for free, you want a HD box it's a $99 upgrade charge, you want a HD DVR that's a $199 upgrade charge. But no matter what box you get it's a leased box and needs to go back at the end of your service.

As for where is it written, using Best Buy web site for example, at DIRECTV - HDTV Receiver with DVR - HR22 it mentions lease fees and then has the terms at Special delivery at BestBuy.com. I know if you go to the store to purchase it, it's mentioned on the sign and on the sales slip you must sign.

Wow,

Somebody needs to tell the sellers on fleabay about this.

Thought you could buy them out right. Well thats shot!

Not sure what to do now! Sit tight and wait for U verse. Go price the local cable company?(sure I wont like that price)

Still don't think its right. Kinda throwing $200 dollars per box to the wind!

Well thanks for the wakeup call. I'll shop around for the best deal.

Still going to hate handing them $497.00 for equipment i can't keep! :(

I still think D* is the best provider. Even if you go with cable, you'll have a fraction of the channels. Don't forget you get one free upgrade as well.

IF you were to buy the rec'r (HD DVR) it would go for around $ 800

I think his justification is resale value. Still won't be anywhere near that though.

Not to hijack this thread, but if I buy a standard receiver, do I have to pay any monthly lease fee?

Except for the 1st receiver on the account all others have the lease fee, SD or HD, doesn't matter.

You can buy Dish receivers and own them outright. It's only DirecTV that does this.

No Its the money you have to put up front! That you will never see again!

There is a fee for every box on the account.
For the good part there is no extra dvr fee with D*. E* will charge for each dvr too.

If you can afford it. Might just as well have another DVR.

Yes, you can buy Dish receivers vs. leasing them, and IIRC the month charge per receiver is exactly the same for leased vs. purchased. So you pay more up front to purchase the box and end up paying the same monthy charge either way.

But in 2 years i can sell the box and get something back. Not nothing at all!
But there is no way I'm paying what they want to own the equipment. Its either suffer with cable or Put up the dame fee's they want.

But I wont treat it like I own it. I might even drag it down the drive way before I send it back!JK! Kind treat it like a rent a car! HE HE!

Yes, that's true, assuming that there is a market for it in 2 years. There's also the other side, if you own the box and it breaks then you're stuck paying to get it fixed, leased they replace it.
