Looks like 3D heading your way!!

3D is the next big thing that people aren't going to actually care about for another half dozen or so years (if ever) until they start replacing their first HDTV purchases.

The install base that would use a channel like this is so small they'd probably get more viewers on a HD shopping channel.

It's just a reason for CE manufacturers to get money from people who have to have the best, and a feather in the cap for content providers to say they're better than others (assuming they actually launch a channel with more than a test pattern).

Avatar in 3D on DirecTV Cinema? See now at least that makes some sense. A full time 3DHD Channel catering to a niche of a minority of satellite subscribers (the minority being HDTV owners) in 2010? Doesn't make as much sense.

After you folks have seen "Avatar", remembering that industry projections are 30 to 50% 3D penetration by 2013, and that Sony and others will have production models this year, a line may form.:D

1080 on a big screen in your house, depending on how close you sit to it vs. how close you sit in the theatre, your brain will perceive it as larger anyway.

Besides that, movies are much more enjoyable with a pause button and with no screaming kids around. 3D would be that much better, if your eyes get tired, pause it and take a break.

This is what I got from DIRECTV when I asked about the 3D announcement.

DIRECTV is not hosting a press conference as we have in years past, nor will we have a booth there. There will be a few DIRECTV executives attending CES though and we may issue some press releases along with everyone else. I can’t speak to what HD guru is reporting except that 3D is something we are very interested in and we’re looking at all of the various pieces of the puzzle that need to be put together.
