The WD Elements drives seem to be an excellent choice for many devices such as the microHD, since these drives don't have special capabilities such as capacity displays and odd partitions that cause problems with receivers, media players, etc.

Just picked up a really cheap external 2TB HDD unit but not having any luck getting the Micro to "see" it. It's a Western Digital My Book with a USB-2 interface, formatted to NTFS. Model # is WDBAAF0020HBK-NESN. I suspect it may require a driver to run as it seems to be pre-loaded with backup software of some sort. Has anyone tried one of these before?
Might hook it up to one of the windoze PCs and see what it does there... Maybe it can be re-formatted or partitioned somehow to make it work...

Google search shows many complaints related to the automatic backup SmartWare installed on this drive. You might try visiting the WD website and learn about disabling the function. In my experience, DVRs require bare drives.

Happy New Year Brian!
Yes I agree best to start from scratch with a freshly formatted drive. Think I'll have to find a different HDD now the Wife is using it on her PC and has files on it now. Oh well... Back to the drawing board I guess... :)

Just an update, I managed to get hold of the drive again so I downloaded a small file from WD to disable the Virtual CD function on the drive and now it works fine. Re-formatted the drive after the micro recognized it. Tried recording and works great on the mpeg4 PBS channels so I suspect it will work on the others as well.

Dumb question time....what format is the Micro hd recording in .TS etc.....I'm thinking of burning a dvd of something I put on my usb drive
A little late -- I find VLC will play a .ts file great. I am using linux but think there is a version of VLC for Win. Also try renaming it to xxxxx.avi and see if you windows program will play it.

I use a Western Digital Elements 1 TB external drive, retired from my home computer. At first it worked well, then I started having problems accessing the drive at about 35% capacity. What has to be done, and this is a bit of an aggravation but necessary if you want flawless performance, is to connect your drive in question to your computer, and do a FULL format (not quick format). This will reset the drive completely (I've had no problems since...already up to 70% capacity of just junk recordings). I say it's aggravating just because of the time involved. If I remember correctly, the full format of a 1 TB drive took around 14 hours to complete. Well-worth it, but just realize it will take some time to format the drive if you have one of a significant size.

Is the Western Digital MyPassport Ultra USB3.0 2 To (model WDBMWV0020BBK) comptatible with the GeoSatPro MicroHD ? I had before a USB2.0 HDD with external power which worked well, but not sure for the self-powered USB3.0; any help would be appreciated.

Happy New Year to all (yes I know, a bit late)

Mike
