I would have no problem with his lifetime ban if ALL the rules applied to EVERYONE *EVERY* time. If the MLB were consistent and applied the rules to everyone and banned everyone who broke every rule then I wouldn't have a beef. I find Rose's lifetime ban to be inherently unfair and targeted to destroy one man and just the one man.

Well.....now you want your cake and eat it too.....LOL!! I mean the same question could be asked about laws we already have in the books on everything from illegals, the rich, the poor, white color crime and so on and so forth....but we won't get into politics..
So when your salary is based on performance and if you hit 40 HR in a season to get a bonus, are you hitting home runs to help your team win, or for your own financial gain?
If you get a bonus for helping your team make the playoffs, are you helping your team win because you want to win or for your own personal gain?
If you are in debt up to your eyeballs and if you don't get a bonus you go bankrupt, are you playing for your team's benefit or your own?
The motivation argument makes no sense for professional players. Everyone on the field has a monetary incentive to win! Some have a real performance incentive.

No cake and I am not hungry. I am serious here. You have the scum of the Earth allowed to play or represent the game, but some one who lays a bet on his own team to win a game...the horror!
Everyone assumes that if you place one or two bets (or visit casinos) you are automatically a compulsive gambler. You know most people who gamble have no problem gambling within their means. The "slippery slope" argument is lost on me. Not everyone who has a drink at lunch is an alcoholic either.
By the same token If you spent your bonus before you get it (credit) you owe if you don't get it.Most of us gamble on future earnings and do not even think twice about it. Think about that when you send in your next mortgage payment.

Ya but as others have said, what if he has money on a game and he pulls out all the stops for THAT game at the expense of pitchers arms and the teams long term goals. The 1919 Black Sox scandal scared MLB and for good reason but I think people don't care much about morals these days whether drugs (steroids included) , assaults, other assorted crimes and degenerate behavior. So everybody just do as you please with no worry about consequencesPlease don't change what I have said to suit your argument. You have not answered my question as to how you know about this man's personality beyond what you see on TV.
I asked one simple question and the answers have been completely unconvincing.
The answers have all been about the bad things he could have done, not what he did. He bet on his team to win. That is it. I still do not know how this is the worst possible thing a person could do. That is all I have been saying.

Digging at what? Its a simple statement. Wife beating, okay. Drug dealing, Okay. Felonious Assault (assault with a deadly weapon), okay. Assaulting a police officer, no problem. Convicted of loansharking and raquetering? what's the matter with that? But place a bet on your own team to win! Out with you, you villainous scum!
My post was not an indictment on all baseball players. It is simply illustrating the idiocy of singling out one man out of all these others who have GONE TO PRISON for felonies, but are still allowed to be part of baseball and represent this sport as roll models. I have the same beef with the NFL, including my beloved Bengals with the best felons in the business.

:up That would be a good indication that he was betting while he was playing too. And let's ask this. If Pete Rose were an average player would anybody care that he was banned for life? No! Because people would say that he disgraced the game and he should be made an example of. Why let the fact that he was a good ballplayer change that? To me it just makes it more important to punish him. Let everybody know from rookies to veterans, bench players to all stars that the rules on gambling are clear and there will be no exceptions or mercy for those that break them. Too bad MLB didn't take the same stance with steroids.Yeah.....that would apply to someone that placed "one or two bets"....but Pete Rose is NOT one of those people...sorry. Pete Rose WAS a compulsive gambler and was still betting even AFTER he was caught with the hand in cookie jar.

Because, you might play players, or make substitutions, in that particular game that you might not make otherwise.
You might bring in a hot pitcher that is normally scheduled for the next game.
Or sandbag the prior games to increase the odds in the game your betting on in order to increase the winnings.

A lawyer or judge convicted of a felony can NEVER be a lawyer (represent a client) or a judge again. They are disbarred almost every time. A professional sports figure who is convicted of a felony is allowed to play the day after they get out of prison. Politicians are allowed to continue to be politicians only if the people vote them back in to office.ALL those crimes can be listed with just about any occupation from lawyers, to judges to politician and to professional sports. Are there discrepencies?
But Pete Rose made his own bed. IF he tells the truth, he is suspended but would have NO DOUBTLY be in baseball FULLY within a couple of years. BUT NO, he lied to a tons of people and CONTINUED to lie and snub baseballs' face in it by having his own signing gigs down the street on HOF weekends and things like that. I mean Tony, you are almost changing my opinion to now not letting him in....lol!
