need help with twinhan and amc4 sat

I'm very new at this. I wanted to experiment with FTA and see how it works. I bought a twinhan from sfgta pci edition, installed it, bought a 20" legacy dish500 dual lnb sat from ebay and mounted it. My zip is 33196. I am trying to catch amc4 sat at 101 degrees. I have tried everything. I can't seem to get past 69% signal strength with no quality strength at all. I've used progfinder and twinhan's own software. Same deal. I aligned the satellite at an elevation of 61 degrees and an azimuth of 41 (around 221 degrees.) I don't know what skew or tilt to use. I've tried no tilt (the dish says 90 at that point) and 139 degrees with no results. Any clues? thanks for all the help. I never thought I would ask for help on one of these forums, but here I am.

I read that the 20" dish500 and lnbf that comes with it will work with fta. you sure I can't use it? Don't mean to doubt but it kills me to have to wait now for more equipment from sfgta. thanks

my skew markings on this dish go from 40 to 140. there is no, for example, 33.5. The middle marker says 90. If I wanted to figure the skew of 33.4 for example, should I add 90 to that number to get my skew? sorry for the dumb question.

Will a triple lnb from directv work? I don't know the difference between linear or circular.
It would seem that no matter how I slice it, my lnbf has to go. Now I have to find an lnbf that will let me pickup amc4 and will fit on the end of my satellite arm for the dish500. Great........very disappointing.
 
ok The signal that is coming from the bird is weaker and a diffrent polarity than what a dbs lnbf can support. the only thing that you would be able to get with that dish is dishnetwork signals (only a few barker channels that are free anything else is hacking) and Directv (and your reciver is not supported for directv) To get the bird that your looking for it needs to be at least a 30 inch dish min. with a FSS LNBF (Lineuar or universal) that will pick up the signals that you need (these lnb's are Horizontal Vertical) where the dish and dtv lnb is (Left circular polarity or Right Circular porlarity)

So to answer your q.. no the dtv triple lnb will not work. Yes you got to get a new lnbf. No you need a 30 inch dish in order to pick up amc 4. and that will come with the proper bracket to mount the lnb.

I suggest ordering from sadoun as I have never had a problem with them and they have veary good quality products for really good prices.

you settled my hash. Ok I guess I spend more money. Could you do one more thing? could you post a link to the EXACT satellite setup I need from sadoun so I can just buy it and get it over with? I only need on coax to my twinhan. I don't need to run cables to any other room. I have dtv for that. thanks man!
 
I finally got the satellite. I installed it, ran an rg6 cable directly to the twinhan card, and started up progfinder to see what my strength is. I will take any satellite I can lock onto just to prove I'm not crazy! I've tried all sorts of elevations. I've tried progdvb but that couldn't be more confusing. What setting do I put in? I have it set at Universal -> 9750 Sw 11700 10600

I have the universal lnbf from sadoun that goes with the 80cm fortec dish. I never get past 70% signal strength and zero on quality with any of these programs.
Does this sound right: I point the sat and try to get the strenght as high as possible (for me that's about 70%) then I scan for channels using the twinhan program on each of the sat's I think I"m pointing at. If I'm on amc4, for example, shouldn't it pick up even one channel? Say I scan for ia5 instead, it should then pick something up there right? I've tried entering channels directly but since I don't know which bird is giving me 70% I rather do the scans.

One big problem is that the tilt on the lnbf is hard to figure out because there are no markings on it! you have to just tilt it and see if you get anything. ARGHHH
 
Skew markings

The circumference of my LNB is 5” (128mm) Divide 360 degrees by (80/16th) to get 4.5 so

360 deg / (80/16”) = 4.50 degrees for each 1/16”.
360 deg / 127mm = 2.83 degrees / mm

The skew shouldn't need to be exact. I can be as much as 10 degrees out on the skew for AMC 3 (skew here is -28) and still get a signal. Once you get a signal watch the signal strength as you turn to fine tune. Keep your arms out of the way or you'll block the signal.
