Hi

Hi Guys

Yes I live in the South Island of New Zealand. Thank you for the web site links,in fact I have already been there. It is a good site!

Our Satellites here are •Optus B3 •Optus B1 • Optus C1. I would be very interested know if anyone from U.S.A,Canada can pick up channel from this part of the world?

Does anyone know if you can pick up NHL on FTA TV? I lived and worked in Canada for a while and was a big fan on the Ice Hockey!!!

Thanks
Louis.

Browing through LyngSat, it appears that you can pick up more satellites than the three you mentioned. Intelsat 701's West Hemi beam, for example, appears to include New Zealand. That would give you Voice of America with a C band dish.

When you check nearby satellites on LyngSat, check each transponder's footprint map to see whether it includes you. If so, you can probably get the FTA channels from that transponder.

Regarding channels that originate from your part of the world, all the New Zealand-originating FTA channels are on Optus B1, again according to LyngSat: http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/New-Zealand.html . Australian FTA channels ( http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/Australia.html ) aren't reaching North America either.

From an excellent page about North American FTA ( http://www.global-cm.net/mpeg2basics.html ): "availability (of a given foreign channel) is contingent upon somebody paying the bill for satellite transmission across the ocean, and then retransmitting to the North American market. ... if a country or a language does not have either a sponsor or an adequate number of paying customers, it will likely not be available to our market."

Finally, I love the NHL (should it ever return), but it's unlikely that there would be more than occasional feeds even in North America. The NHL offered an excellent subscription package to DBS and digital cable customers here, and I hope to see NHL players in NHL uniforms again some day. :)
