NFL preseason 2010-2011 Official discussion thread!

A foxsports report saying that the Lions are crossing their fingers that the Rams do NOT go QB with the first pick, which would allow them to trade down with the Bills or Browns who are believed to be in the QB hunt this draft.

Same reporter also says the Rams right now would likely draft OL Mccoy right now, as he's a favorite of Spags.

The Bears have reportedly met with Peppers agent... he's not a FA yet though, so this could be considered tampering.

Denver has used merely a 1st round tender on Brandon Marshall. This is a pretty clear 'ok guys, come and get him' message to anyone willing to give up a first round pick for him. Some teams like the Ravens that pick in the 20s might consider making this move.

Kyle Orton was given the same tender.

Dumervil was given the highest tender, a 1st and 3rd would be received in compensation if anyone were to sign him.

Cribbs holding a press conference Friday, whether he has a new deal or not... to either announce the deal or talk about his next move.

Though the Plain Dealer says that Cribbs most likely will announce a new deal, a league source tells us that Cribbs will be announcing a new deal only if a new deal is done. If a new deal isn't done, Cribbs will be announcing his next move.

The event will occur in conjunction with a previously scheduled appearance by Cribbs at the 2010 Cleveland Auto Show.

"It's not very often that fans get to hear an announcement from a player in person," Cribbs said in a release. "And, it's even more unlikely that they're given a chance to speak to that player right after that announcement has been made.

"That's why I'm choosing to have this press conference at the auto show. So that anyone in attendance will have the opportunity to hear what I have to say and the chance to speak with me about it in person."

The Browns told the Plain Dealer that the team isn't aware of the press conference. And that serves only to bolster the reality that a deal isn't done, yet.

Other Browns news today...

- Browns settled with Kokinis who they tried to fire and not pay. They had to pay him, it's not known how much, but likely most of the multiple millions he was owed.

- Browns cut their center of 4 years, 10 year vet Hank Fraley.

Tons of tenders today... Free agency starts at midnight on Friday, and will be the start of the uncapped season if no deal is worked out at the 11th hour, which is unlikely. Probably no new CBA until after the season ends next year with a lockout looming.

Curiously, this article points out that 40 % of the players were not on the field as they were involved with the SB the next week, very understandable, however, if anyone has a way to find this out, I would be curious to find an answer to :

When the game took place the week after the SB, what percentage of players that WERE in the SB and scheduled to play, didn't ?

I wouldn't doubt that it too would be close to what it was this year.

.

Geesh. Always so cynical when talking of the Browns. Cribbs has a deal in place. He wouldn't hold a press conference at the CLEVELAND Auto Show if he didn't. Face it, Cribbs loves this city and is proud to stay here and the team did the right thing by taking care of him.

Kind of surprised by this, but we drafted our Center of the next 10-15 years last year in Alex Mack. Hank was relegated to the guard position.

Thomas Jones is 31 now. Typically, running backs in the NFL have a dramatic decrease in productivity after 30. TJ's value has already peaked. I think they'd be pressing their luck to resign him to an extension. Plus, they have a rather promising young runner in Shonn Greene.

True this. NFL running backs who are productive after 30 are a very rare breed.

Those were the words from the article, that's why I quoted it

More Browns stuff... a couple of sites saying things don't look good for Quinn in Cleveland, that the Browns are in the market to acquire a QB and Holmgren doesn't want a QB competition. Cleveland Plain-Dealer suggests Quinn may be available for teams to acquire, while NFP is more blunt and says that from what they've heard nobody in the organization think Quinn is the answer short or long term.

CPD - Cleveland Browns expected to be active in trade market, release center Hank Fraley | cleveland.com

NFP - Diner morning news: It

Boldin now reportedly available to teams for just a 3rd round pick. Since that is the first round in which the Bears pick, I wonder if they'd do it, since they really need a nice WR threat (and can Boldin still fulfill that role?). Naturally when the Cardinals are involved, there's a suggestion that the Chiefs may make an offer to bring Boldin back together with his former coach.

FREE AGENCY STARTS IN 12 HOURS OMGOMGOMGOMG!

Yeah, both Quinn and Anderson are being shopped, especially Anderson. He's due a $2 million roster bonus on March 19th. No way the Browns pay him. If he isn't traded before then, he'll be cut. Quinn on the other hand has a very salary friendly contract for a back-up. The majority of his contract is incentive laden and wouldn't kick in unless he plays.

Cribbs' deal nearly finished

The final detail to be ironed out is the amount of guaranteed money Cribbs will receive. The Browns are offering $5 million and Cribbs is looking for $10 million. That seems like a wide gap, but sources close to the negotiation expect the two sides to split the difference at about $7.5 million.

Cribbs

- Cardinals have released FS Antrel Rolle, but intend to try and sign him as a FA, so that they didn't have to pay his $4m bonus that he was due tomorrow. Apparently the Jets are going to try and do the same with Thomas Jones.

- Chargers have done a complete about face on Sproles, from no tender to the highest possible (1st and 3rd pick, $7.3m). This will be a 700k raise for Sproles. Reportedly he had already scheduled a visit with the Chiefs, Rams, Skins, Eagles

- Chargers have released NT Jamal Williams. That's a big hole to fill.

- WRs Coles and Randal El being released by the Bengals and Skins

- Jets have released CB Lito Sheppard

- Raiders are expected to release Justin Fargas and DT Gerard Warren before they are due bonuses this month. Same with Browns' Derek Anderson before his bonus in a couple weeks.

Edit: more Skins cuts - Rock Cartwright, Randy Thomas, Ladell Betts, Fred Smoot, Cornelius Griffin
