If anyone has a tower desktop PC with Windows XP that still works good, (just the tower) my youngest daughter's PC is dying a slow death, and a new one is out of the question ($$$) right now. Don't need the mouse & stuff. Cheap?? Maybe trade for some FTA stuff. Thanks all! :)

So what is it and what appears to be wrong with it? I've got a bunch of spare parts for some older stuff so maybe it could be fixed? Or has it been subjected to the latest round of malware?

Gateway 40G Hd and 2G processor-circa 2002. It just loads things very slowly if at all. Programs stop responding, etc. Did a disk defrag but no better. This thing should run better than it does.

Either your daughter picked up a bug or more likely you just need to blow everything away and reload XP as a new install. Lot easier than trying to figure if it's a registry error problem or any thing else. If you have a spare hard drive install it and then install XP on the new drive and see it it's better.

I agree with what he says. Just use the restore discs and it should be a whole lot faster.

I also agree. A fresh reload with full format will solve your problems. Send me a PM if you need help getting this done.

If all the box is used for is general browsing and simple documents, a UBUNTU install might be perfect for you instead of XP.

This is an FYI for you guys. What is happening is that these old computers were shipped with a minimal amount of MEMORY way back and now, with all the updates and crap that M$ does they have made them eat up memory like a big dog, hence the slow down. You can reload it but I'll bet you a "C" note that once SP3 is installed it will be slow as a snail again!! Think about it. IMHO M$ is doing this on purpose to try to get rid of XP and move ppl into Win 7!!

Now, what I've found is that most of these older computers only came with 128 or 256 MB of memory. With all the crap that's put in them now through updates I set the new minimum @ 512MB and recommend 1GB for optimum performance.

So check to see how much memory it has and if it's 256 or less go on fleabay and try to find a memory upgrade for that box of at least 512 and preferably 1GB. That stuff should be available for around $25 or so.
