Ordering PPV

New to D* and have a question about ordering pay per view (not On Demand). I'm a little confused because I have seen on the website where I can order it - usually a 24 hour "All Day Ticket" for one of the channels, but then I've also heard about people deciding to record a PPV movie to the DVR, but then not being charged until they begin watching it? Is that only for On Demand purchases or does D* have a slightly different way of handling PPV.
