Directv announced that after 3/3 you won't be able to use the app to download and view your DVR out of home. I used it all the time when I was on a plane. I guess one more service is gone from AT&T.

Will you still be able to stream your locals out of home? I wonder if this could be the start of AT&T ugrading the DTV Everywhere App to the DTV Now app and that would use DTV over IP and the cloud DVR?

You will still be able to view the channels that were not being streamed from your Genie. You'll also still be able to download recordings while on your home network to your device to view while out of home. What you are losing is the ability to stream recordings that reside only on your DVR, like your local stations news casts or channels that DIRECTV doesn't stream via their CDN, such as channel 287 AHC. And yes this sucks and is another step backwards by DIRECTV.

I get the feeling you might be right with this one for once lol. The Directvnow app does all of this minus the dvr part

Gotta be honest here, I use that feature occasionally, time delay sports when traveling. This is a real step backward. It was always a little finicky and hard to troubleshoot, tough on their tech support maybe, but has been a feature for several years going back to Nomad / Genie Go.

It's one thing to stop innovating, cut costs/people, but it is entirely different thing to start actively removing features for the sake of making support and development easier.

Sad times getting worse.

I wonder how much of this has to do with a single company being both the content owner and the content distributor.
