I don't think the Tonight Show really hit its stride until after Allen and Parr (let's ignore the Lescoulie/Collins stint between them). The transition to color TV may have been instrumental.
Decades has been running Ed Sullivan for weeks. I forgot how horrible that show was until I tried to sit down and watch it lately. It was popular with my grandparents, but all I seen was a few good acts surrounded by a bunch of no talent acts that left you wondering, WTH was that? I'm old, but I'm not old enough to call that entertainment. 
Recall a TV landscape where their weren't dancing shows and singing shows and shows featuring acrobats, animal tricks, magicians or ventriloquists. With all of that separated into various competition shows, much of it seems out of place.
Nobody would believe today that we'd sit for watching a pop star singing for an hour (I'm thinking of Andy Williams).
The Andy Williams Show was fun and funny. I loved Charlie Callas as Captain Weird. LOL

But they always had current rock bands on too.
True, but it was hard to sit through all the mediocre acts to get to them. They almost always featured them as the last act at the end of the show. Some of their guest were horrible, especially some of the "singers". Jazz, Blues and Reggae were never my favorites unless it was Louis Armstrong, Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles. If you had the patients to sit through some of their acts to get to the good ones, it was alright.
