We're trying to re-purpose an old Sci Atlanta D9223 receiver to pick up a Free to Air service in Southern California. We have performed a factory reset of the unit to clear it out completely of old settings.

We are having some trouble trying to set it to Free to Air mode. We've been instructed by the broadcaster to "change the CA mode to Free to Air." I have followed instructions from a previous thread:

1) Push view-menu-user-next-yes
2) Push user until it says Tune mode: Non Power Vu...

Only we don't get that. It stopped after the second screen.

From messing around with the front menu buttons for a while, we came across something close by hitting menu-3 to get to a Tune mode field, but the only choices were:

1) DVB
2) MPEG
3) Fixed PID

Is it a firmware issue why we can't see "Non PowerVu"? The D9223 manual doesn't mention trying to do this anywhere, so we're really stuck.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know anything about that receiver, but did you pick one of those 3 (DVB-MPEG-Fixed PID) and see what happens next? My guess would be DVB first, then try the others if necessary?

Tried all three choices, and it didn't do anything.

I am wondering...could it be the firmware? Does anyone have any information on the most recent firmware update for the 9223? Where to get it? How to install it?

On the main menu screen, it reads:
Decoder Versions: 1.25/1.04(2)
Additional Versions: 2.12/2.11

OK...found this and hopefully it helps.
In Alaska there is a channel called ARCS (Alaska Rural Communication Service) and they broadcast 3 stations to villages via low powered stations. Looks like they use the same box (the channels are FTA if you are in Alaska) so this should work

D9223 PowerVu Retune Instructions for the Multiplex Procedure
How to Retune your PowerVu D9223 Receiver for the new multiplex

First perform a factory reset. This process uses the front panel display.

Press the ALT once to change from normal receiver operation to ALT Mode. The ALT light flashes off and on continuously.

Press the CHAN and CHAN buttons simultaneously. The front panel displays, “do?”.

Press the YES button to initiate the Factory Reset (pressing any other key aborts the action).

Once initiated, a Factory Reset CAN NOT be interrupted or reversed. The front panel will display, “CLr” for several seconds, then it will display, “InIt” for several more, then go black, then display four dashes - - - - and finally display a single blinking dot. The Factory Reset is now complete. Press the STANDBY button and the front panel will display a zero.

Now you may proceed with programming the receiver. This process uses menus you will not see from the front panel. Press the buttons EXACTLY as directed. If you make a mistake, press “VIEW” and start back at this point.

Press the “MENU” button, then the number 2 then the number 9.

Press the “NEXT” button.

Enter the numbers, 1 0 9 3 5 0

Press the “NEXT” button.

Press the CHAN button TWICE

Press the “NEXT” button.

Enter the numbers, 1 3 2 5 0

Press the “YES” button. Wait 5 seconds

Press the “VIEW” button. Wait 5 seconds

Press the CHAN button ONCE

You should now see a number 1 in the display window, the signal light should come on, and ARCS should now be playing out your receiver.
now where it says enter the numbers that is where you would enter the frequency and stuff you need :)
