Recording for a digital box

Has anyone found as easy way to record from a digital box. Since the box has to be used is there a way to hook up a vcr or a dvd recorder so that you can time record without being around.

What kind of digital box? Cable? FTA? Dish? DirectTV?

Well right now I have digital cable it is a motorola.
I would like to switch to direct tv is i could get the recording thing to work.
My friend has tivo I personal think the digital pic it records is not that great.
